Peacefully at the Riverpark Retirement Residence, Ottawa on Monday, May 30, 2022. James ‘Stuart’ Scharf, at the age of 101 years. Beloved husband of the late Lorette Scharf (Poirier). Stuart is survived by his sons Paul, Ted (Lesley), Philip (Melanie), and Gordon (Christine); his grandchildren Tara, Jamie, Shauna (Almas), Greg and Sarah; his great grandchildren Eleanor Watson, Zoe and Charlie Almas, Aurelia and Nathaniel Scharf as well as several nieces and nephews. Stuart was predeceased by his parents Janet (Bell) and Howard Scharf, brother Gordon Scharf (Betty) and sister Morie Wallace (Bruce).
Stuart emigrated from Catrine, Scotland at the age of three and spent his childhood and teen years in Toronto, attending Forest Hill Public and High Schools. He joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise’s) when he was 19 and served in Canada, Jamaica, Scotland, England and France as a Platoon Sergeant, Anti-Tank Platoon. Stuart saw action in France, including the Falaise Gap until he was wounded at Igoville France, with four of his buddies, near the Seine River, ending his active War duty in August 1944. He served as a small arms instructor at the Officer Training School in Brockville, before being discharged in June 1945, and continued his military service as a Reservist with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. Stuart moved to Ottawa where he worked at the E.B. Eddy Paper Mill as Mechanical Maintenance Planner until he retired in 1973. He and Lori enjoyed many years in their home on the St. Lawrence in Lancaster and winters in Kissimmee Florida.
As per his wishes, there will not be a service. Cremation has taken place and this website will be updated once his ashes have been laid to rest beside Lori at Capital Memorial Gardens, Ottawa. The photo is when he received the Legion of Honor, which is the highest French Order of Merit, recognizing his service in France in WWII.
