Sachsalber, Jakob Karl
Dec. 29, 1929 – June 30, 2022
It is with deep sadness that the family of Jakob (Jack) Sachsalber announce his peaceful passing on June 30, 2022, age 92. Jakob is survived by 3 children, Robert (Anne Hanlon), Ruth (Ernie Dal Grande), and Janine (Steve Moutsatsos). Eight grandchildren called him “Opa”, Sophia, Jasmine, Peter, and Christopher Moutsatsos and Meghan, Kristen, Lisa, and Patrick Sachsalber. Two siblings, Frieda Kasel and Arthur Sachsalber, also survive him. He will be missed by nieces, nephews and extended family in Canada and Germany. Jack’s wife of 47 years, Maria Strohmeier, predeceased him in 2006. His brothers, Paul, Karl, Oskar and Joe are predeceased as well.
Jack was born with entrepreneurial blood flowing through his veins, and he was tenacious, from a young age, at everything he did. He emigrated to Canada from Germany at the age of 22. After working as a lumberjack, a miner at Inco, and a vacuum cleaner salesman, he and his brothers started a business. If you were shopping for a TV in Sudbury between 1962 and 2001, you probably visited City Electronics and bought it there.
Jack pursued his many hobbies and interests with great enthusiasm. He loved photography and took thousands of pictures of his children, grandchildren, and holiday trips. When he began painting, he filled dozens of canvases using watercolours and oils. He also spent hours working on his stamp and coin collections. In 2008, he wrote and self-published his memoirs. This book was filled with wonderful anecdotes, memories, and pictures about his life. Jack placed a great deal of importance on family and to them he was generous with his resources, with his experience, and with his desire to share knowledge. Cheers to you Jack – you were truly a special man.
Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful staff at Park Place Retirement Residence in Ottawa. We sincerely appreciate that Jack’s last days were made so comfortable.
