Jakob Unger passed away on Friday, January 28, 2022, at the age of 93. Jakob was born in Milaradowka, Ukraine in 1928 to Johann and Anna Unger (nee Rempel). He leaves his wife of 67 years, Elenore Betty Unger.
There were six children born to Jake and Elenore, Richard Edward Unger, Robert Paul Unger, Ronald Jakob Unger, Marian Elenore Unger, Kathleen Ann Unger and John David Unger. Very sadly, John David passed away in 2017.
In addition, Jakob is survived by his brother John David Unger who lives in Oliver, B.C. with his wife Katie. He is predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Hodgkinson and his brother, Peter Unger who was lost in the war.
Jakob led a remarkable life from his birthplace to his final resting place in Winnipeg, Manitoba, surviving the destruction of their village with his parents and siblings, and as refugees in WW II, and then emigrating to Canada at the age of 20.
Initially he got work in the forests of Manitoba, but then became Service Manager for Farmhand for 26 years, a company specializing in the manufacture of farm implements. At the age of 45 he began a career with Kitchen Craft, where management really appreciated his problem-solving skills. He stayed for 20 years until his retirement at 65, but remained as busy as ever, volunteering his skills at church, helping his children with all manner of repairs to their homes and maintenance of their gardens. He and Mom continued travelling in their Westphalia most often to the mountains in Canada.
They also volunteered their time in Lithuania and Germany numerous times over the years in retirement, repairing and renovating schools and churches.
Summers were very memorable for all his children, of going to beaches and camping on the weekends. Every summer involved the annual family vacation to various parts of Canada and the United States staying nightly in a tent trailer towed daily by an LTD Country Squire Station Wagon. It was still a very full car with 8 family members.
Jakob will be greatly missed by his family and friends, although his legacy will live on in all our lives.
The funeral service will be at the River East Mennonite Brethren Church, Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at 1 pm. Unfortunately, at this time, guests are limited to the immediate family.
Please send memorial donations to your charity of choice in lieu of flowers.
