Obituary For Jacob “Jake” Isaac Wiebe
Jake Isaac Wiebe, resident of Grande Prairie, AB, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at the age of 87 years.
Jake was born in Lymburn, AB, on July 15, 1934. He was the second of five children born to John and Mary Wiebe.
Jake started working at the age of 16 in Grande Prairie, driving for Goodkey Transport. In 1957, he met his wife Kay Sydorko when both were working at McGavin’s Bakery. Jake and Kay had three children: Neil (Colleen) Wiebe of Chestermere, AB, Danny Wiebe, and Tracy (Rob) Ferguson of Beaverlodge, AB.
In 1958, Jake started working for Northern Freightways as a dispatcher, then transferred to Whitehorse, YT. Over the next several years Jake worked for many transportation companies as a terminal manager and troubleshooter in Peace River, Hay River, High Level, Spruce Grove, Fort McMurray, and spent time working in the Arctic. In 1975, he went into the construction field, working in Cassiar, BC, Mayo, YT and Faro, YT building houses, apartments, and roads. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator building the Revelstoke and Mica Dams.
Jake and Kay owned many businesses over the next 20 years, including a cement plant and street sweeping business in the Okanagan, a Chevron service station and convenience store in Enderby, BC, a 41 unit motel and mini storage in Dawson Creek, BC, and also developed an acreage subdivision.
Jake and Kay retired and moved back to Grande Prairie, in 2002, and spent many years travelling and spending winters in Arizona. Jake’s retirement hobby was making beautiful stained glass lamps and wall and window hangings.
Jake is survived by his wife Kay; his son Neil (Colleen) Wiebe, granddaughter Elayne (Dylan) Kelly, great grandchildren: Scott, Sarah and Grace, grandson Chris (Tamara) Peters, great-grandson Aiden, granddaughter Codi (Tyler) Lysenchuk, great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Ryan, and Jackson; daughter Tracy (Rob) Ferguson, granddaughter Amber (Chris) Bogner, great-grandchildren: Carsten, River and Willow, grandson Patrick Ferguson; his sister Irene (Gene) Huber; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents John and Mary; sisters Margaret and Martha; brother Corny; as well as his son Danny Wiebe.
A Private Service was held by the family at Jake’s request.
