J. Alfred’s Obituary
JEDDRY, Joseph Alfred – Age 99, with loving family and friends at his side, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 14, 2021, in his home in Meteghan, Nova Scotia. Born in Meteghan Station on October 3, 1921, he was a son of the late James and Mary Anne Jeddry and is pre-deceased by his wife, Stella; siblings, Gustave, Camille, Albert, and Marguerite; and his son James. He was a loving husband and father, a proud World War II veteran, and a long-time employee of Yale University for over 30 years, where he worked as a senior technical specialist in nuclear physics.
As a young man, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1942. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, deployed overseas, landed in Scotland, and then was posted to the Elgin Regiment Armored Division as a frontline tank operator. He crossed the English Channel to fight in the Invasion of Normandy, took part in the breakout from Caen, the Closing of the Falaise Gap, and crossed the Rhine river driving a tank across a pontoon bridge to fight in the Battle of the Bulge. When the war ended, he was sent to Holland as a welding instructor before returning to Nova Scotia. He and Stella then moved to North Haven, Connecticut where he raised his family.
Always a gentleman, he loved his wife, Stella; his children, Paul, James, and Janet; his grandchildren, James, Jennifer, and Craig; and great-grandchild (Émile); playing cards with “the gang”, golf, the Toronto Blue Jays, scallops, going to the rock in his Lincoln; and held an extra special place in his heart for his caregivers, “Alfred’s Angels + Kevin”, who made his final years in life happy and safe ones through impeccable physical and mental care. We will never forget him, and the song Red River Valley is sure to bring a smile to us.
A memorial funeral mass will be held for Alfred on Wednesday, July 13th, 2022 at 11 a.m. in Stella Maris Church, Meteghan with Rev. Hospice Akoffodji officiating where a veteran service will follow.
