It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Father Yvon Barrieau on December 19 after many years serving the Lord at the side of his parishioners. He joins his parents Léonard and Léonie, his sisters Irène, Ethel, Rita and Florine, his brother Rufin, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Eloi (Eva), Alfred (Ethel), Aldéric (Aline), Paul-Émile (Marguerite) and Maria (Rufin), his niece Murielle (Eloi and Eva) and grand-nephews, Mathew (Alfred and Ethel) and Jeffrey (Rosaire). With them, he will watch over those left in mourning, his brothers and sisters, Eva, Cécile, Maria, Alfred, Rosa, Aline, Rhéa, Marguerite, Rosaire and Marcel, his brother-in-law, Louis (Maria), and his sisters-in-law, Edna (Alfred), Muriel (Rosaire) and Susan (Marcel), 208 nephews and nieces, and numerous cousins and friends.
Born in Acadieville on February 24, 1927, Yvon attended elementary school in his native village and thereafter studied at the Sacred Heart College in Bathurst and the Sacred-Heart of Mary Seminary in Halifax. He was ordained on March 21, 1953, by Mgr. Norbert Robichaud in Lakeburn. He was vicar at the Cathedral, chaplain for the Catholic Youth and secretary for the Archbishop from 1953-55, then left for Rome in 1955 to study canon law. Upon his return in 1957 he successively served as vicar in Pointe-du-Chene, Dieppe, Moncton, Grande-Digue et Lakeburn while sitting as judge on the Matrimonial Tribunal and as representative member with different religious groups, including the National Committee of Founding Churches of Canada, the Canadian Biblical Society and the Council of Moncton Churches. He retired briefly in 2000 but returned to duties as moderator priest in Shediac, Grande-Digue, Scoudouc and Pointe-du-Chene. He was appreciated by his parishioners for his humility, kindness, and numerous small services in meeting their needs.
Those who knew Père Yvon knew him for his passion for horses and sulky racing, his second love after the Lord and his family. Numerous hours on his father’s farm led him to racing – one of few priests to do so – and training horses that he appreciated for their kindness according to an interview with a local journalist. His last animated conversation during his last days was with his “kid” brother Marcel remembering the many horses he cared for over the years. He also appreciated a long visit by Mgr. Valéry Vienneau shortly before his death.
Visits will take place at the Passage-Chartersville Funeral Home at 363 Amirault in Dieppe on Thursday, December 22, between 1 and 3 pm and 4 and 6 pm. The wearing of a mask is required. His life will be celebrated with a burning chapel to pay homage at 1 pm on Friday, December 23, at the Sainte-Thérèse Church in Dieppe and funeral services presided by Mgr. Vienneau, at 2 pm. A reception will follow at the Dieppe Golden Age club.

The family expresses its appreciation for the care provided by the Albert House and asks that any donation be given to the latter or the Nazareth House.
