Moncton, NB – Dec 6th we lost our irreplaceable father after a sudden illness. He weathered tremendous hardships yet he never surrendered to them. He didn’t just endure either, he made it seem effortless. Our father was our hero. He was such a hard working man. If he wasn’t at 1 of 2 or 3 jobs, he was interacting with his kids, or he was on community teams and functions that supported all youth including us.
Dad began his earliest employment in the navy and worked anywhere he had to thereafter, to support his family. He spent countless hours shuttling 5 children to activities or school or work and he took pride in it. He and mom scrimped and saved for a boat when we were older. So many more precious memories were made in Cocagne, as they were from camping or playing table hockey, or out on frozen ponds, or at Mackay’s dairy for a family ice cream treat. Dad always made himself available to us. When he could no longer skate or climb trees in his 80’s, he hiked lengthy distances instead and lived vicariously through his children’s adventures. We were beyond Blessed. As we began having children of our own, they became trophies to he and mom. Mom gave the cuddles and kisses, dad was the human stuffie or Tonka toy. They delighted in each interaction. We parents were the leftovers. We understood this shift of position and relived our own youth watching these bonds grow. Some may say our father died of a broken heart after losing mom, but that wouldn’t be entirely true. He continued on fulfilling his fatherly role to us all, knowing he had to now take on mom’s role too and honour his promise to go on for her. This man’s heart had some bumps along the way but it was always pumping out accolades and hugs and optimism. He always wanted to hear about our days even when we had to bellow into that remaining partial good ear. His love was unconditional, and he was never skimpy with it.
Our parents were truly inspirational. There was a light in them that came from deep within. It was a gift they received before they were born and it glowed brightly for all to see. It’s actually a free gift we were all given. It’s a promise of more than what we see here in our short lifetimes. This isn’t the end for him or us. It’s an exciting new beginning without life’s hardships. No more tears, no more pain and it’s eternally ours when we follow Christ. So don’t cry for what we may appear to have lost, but celebrate instead…..what awaits. Being absent from our body simply means we are present with the Lord.
Dad was predeceased by his adoring wife Yvonne of 60 years. He also lost numerous brothers and sisters, Charles, Alice, Marguerite, Betty, Dave and Lawrence. He is survived by both Peggy Boudreau in NS and Helen Bobier in Alberta. His 5 surviving children are Celina (Dave), Jim (Denise), Mike, Angela (Dwayne), Lisa (Troy), all of Moncton. The precious grandchildren are Melissa, Aly, Kasi, Brennan,Karlee, Brianna, Emma, Brandon, and Elijah. (Kelly Anne predeceased her cousins and grandparents in 1994.)The great grandchildren that brought untold joy were Starr, Blue, and Amberleigh. Our parents always said they should have begun with all the grand and great grandchildren first.
There will be no funeral service at this time. We will have a graveside memorial in June 2023 at Chartersville cemetery for our parents.
Please take some time today to let those closest to you know they are loved. Don’t take it for granted they know. In memory of our father may we suggest an act of kindness in his honour.
Finally, If you wish to contribute to something he really believed in, then feel free to make a donation to Real Canadian Recreation.
