Surrounded by her loving family, Betty Lou Peppard, aged 84, passed peacefully on Thursday, December 1 at Spencer’s Nursing Home. She was born in Truro, NS, on Nov. 20, 1938, to John and Thelma Sutherland. She will be dearly missed by her devoted husband Bill, of 66 years. Their love burned as brightly in the end as it did when the highschool sweethearts moved from Truro to build a life in Moncton. She will also be missed by her children Bill (Cathy) of St. Andrews, NB; Donna (Terry) of Calgary AB; Shelley (Rob) of Charlottetown, PEI. She was predeceased by son Gary (Josanne) of Little River, NB. She was revered by her grandchildren Jessica (Adam), Josh, Brittany (Fred), Alex, Andrew, Bianca (Kyle), Dylan, and Sophie. She was the proud great-grandmother of five – Mya, Noah, Oaklyn, Hudson, and Theo. She will be remembered fondly by sister and brother, Louise Fielding, Truro, NS; Albert Peppard, Middleton, NS and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and step-mother Pearl (Guelph, ON), she was predeceased by her siblings Hazel and Lee of Nova Scotia.
Betty lived a full and vibrant life. In the early years, she worked at Eaton’s, the telephone company, hosted boarders and raised their four children. At 48, she returned to college and graduated at the top of her class as a Travel Counselor. She and Bill traveled extensively. Betty was a wonderful cook and seamstress. She garnered many friendships from curling, bowling, golf and bridge. Her bowling prowess with the Moncton Gems earned her a spot in the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame and the Moncton Wall of Fame. She was also inducted into the International Bowling Hall of Fame and she also represented New Brunswick in Masters Curling at the Nationals. Over the years, she loved Slowpoke trips, camping, dancing, skating, New Year’s levees, a glass of wine in the backyard with neighbours, her St. John’s United Church connections, and most of all any time spent with her family.
Betty and Bill waltzed in the kitchen, walked in the garden and snuggled together for old movies right up to the final days. It was a good life, well lived!
A celebration of her life will be held on Monday, December 5, at St John’s United Church, 75 Alma Street, Moncton at 2 pm, presiding by Pastor Aaron Billard. Reception will follow at the church hall.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, December 4 from 2 pm to 5 pm at Passage Funeral Home, 625 Mountain Road, Moncton. Because of vulnerability, the family requests the use of masks.
Donations in Betty’s memory can be made to the Friends of the Moncton Hospital, St. John’s United Church, Salvation Army, Alzheimer’s Association or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
