The family is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Ila Maria Franklin (nee Garvey) on Wednesday August 17, 2022 at the Norfolk General Hospital in Simcoe where she fought her final battle with COPD surrounded by the love in the hearts of her children and their families. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Victor (1991). She will be greatly missed by her children, Ken (Terry) of Deep River and Dave (Laurie) of Brantford in Ontario and Vicki (Lindsay) Irricana, Alberta, 13grandchildren and, at last count, 16 great grandchildren, including one who carries her name forward. All of her descendants had pictures plastering her refrigerator in Ohsweken and special places in her heart. In her generation, Ila was predeceased by 4 sisters and 3 brothers on the Garvey side and her many in-laws on the Franklin side but she will be remembered by many nephews and nieces.
In her life, Ila worked as a hairdresser in her home and in various restaurant, office and retail jobs in Burford and Brantford. Her positive outlook on life, compassionate nature and listening ear quickly made her a special friend to the people she met. These characteristics helped carry her through open heart surgery and two separate brain surgeries. After living in Burford for most of her life and then for a while in Alberta and Deep River, she became known as Nomad Grandma. She finally settled in Ohsweken and became a leading member of the Ohsweken Baptist Church. Ila’s faith was very important to her – always learning and always ready to talk with anyone who cared to listen.
Friends will be received at the Keith Ovington Funeral Home, 134 King Street, Burford on Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Interment Pioneer Cemetery, Burford.
