It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Howard Grant Smith of Dugald, MB. After a brief illness Howard passed away peacefully at the Selkirk General Hospital on March 20, 2022 at the age of 85 with his loving wife Louise by his side.
Howard was predeceased by his parents Stanley and Lillian Smith. His siblings Audrey Stevens and Clifford Smith. His first wife Margaret (Peggy) and sister-in-laws Audrey Muir, Diane and Eleanor Edmonds. His brother-in-law Frank Edmonds and granddaughter Laura Peters.
He is survived by his wife Louise. His children Greg(Tina), Grant (Nancy), Darrin, Deanne(John), Scott(Darcie), Shirlene(Waren), Barbara(Larry) and Jan(Paul).
Grandpa will be greatly missed by his many grandchildren and great granchildren that cherished the time he spent with them.
His visits will also be missed by his nieces, nephews, and brother-in-laws.
Howard was born on April 7, 1936. He grew up on the family farm in Dugald, Manitoba. After completing high school he received his diploma in Agriculture from the U of M and was employed as a poultry inspector. After his father Stanley passed in 1962 he took over the family farm where he and Peggy raised their 6 children. Over the years the farm grew to form the company Smiths’ Honey and Seed Farm Ltd that his sons continue to run today.
After the passing of Peggy in 1988 Howard found his second love Louise Leask. They married on April 15, 1995. Throughout the years Howard and Louise enjoyed spending their time with family and friends. They also enjoyed travelling and many community and recreational activities.
Howard was very passionate when it came to his community and agriculture. Over the years, he volunteered his time on many boards and committees as well as being instrumental part of forming Northstar Seed Ltd.
Howard will be greatly missed out on links in the summer months and on the ice at the Springfield Curling Rink during the winter months.
The family are sincerely grateful to the amazing staff at the Selkirk General Hospital for the wonderful care and support they provided to Howard. Louise would also like to thank their many friends of Dugald Estates and in the community for their support and well wishes during this difficult time.
At the request of Howard a small private service will be held.
In lieu of flowers Howard and Louise have requested that donations be made in his memory to the new care home Dugald Place.
