Obituary
“For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.” —Romans 14:7-8
We are grieved to announce that on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, Hennie Doornenbal went to be with the Lord, peacefully at her home, in the presence of her loving family, at the age of 63. Born in Drouwen, the Netherlands in 1958, she immigrated to Canada with her husband, Peter, in 1981. She took her work along with her, and, at the Michener Centre in Red Deer, she cared for the mentally disabled, while her husband established their dairy farm. They started in Clive, and then later, in 1984, moved the farm to its present location outside of Ponoka. They lived here together for 38 years, and Hennie became a founding and leading member of the Sonrise Christian Reformed Church, where she left an everlasting impact on the lives of its members and the people it serves.
In 2000, she adopted her two kids, Ethan and Mitchell, raising them with the same gentle love, care, and humility that her many friends will always remember her for.
It’s hard to overstate the scale of her community’s loss. The dining room table was never empty, and the coffee was always on, and she was always present as an ear to listen or a steady voice for counsel.
She is survived by her husband Peter; her two children, Ethan and Mitchell; her sister Aaltje (Harm); and her in-laws: Jan (Hennie), Clare, Geert, Anne (Rianne), Tineke (Robert), and Mieke (Himke). She is predeceased by her parents Roelof and Anna; and her in-laws Manus and Willie, Elze, Ria, Dirk, and Jan.
We are thankful to all the Ponoka healthcare workers who helped her in the last weeks of her life. The family will be holding a private burial ceremony Wednesday, February 9, 2022, but they will hold a public memorial service at the Sonrise Christian Reformed Church at 2:00 p.m. that same day. To honour her life of service to others, donations can be made directly to the Ponoka Community Growing Project or the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
