Obituary of Helen Louise Comfort
Helen Louise Comfort: Celebration of Life
Helen was born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia on July 3rd, 1921. Helen died peacefully, on May 3rd, 2022, with her family by her side. She was 100 years of age.
She was the daughter of Hilda (nee Giles) and Clyde Cain. In 1945 she married Al Comfort. Al was a member of the R.C.A.F and so they travelled to different postings across Canada, as well as two tours of duty in France and Holland. Helen loved to travel, ensuring each move was an adventure for the family of five girls. Upon retirement Al and Helen joined Youth with a Mission,-sharing ministry in Mexico, Argentina, and California. These were joyful years as Helen was in her element cooking and caring for the large group.
Moving to Saint John in 1972, they were first members of the Wesleyan Church, later Grace Harvest Church, and in years after Al died she attended the International House of Prayer. Helen’s church family was a great part of her life. She loved The Lord and spent many hours in prayer and bible study. She believed in helping others. She loved mission work and so she sponsored three children with World Vision until her death.
Helen was an avid reader, reading on a diverse group of subjects. She “liked to be in the know.” She enjoyed crafts, knitting, sewing, baking, and needle point. In her youth she was athletic, noted for basketball. Her high school team won the Nova Scotia championship three years in a row. You will find her picture in the Yarmouth Sports Hall of Fame.
Helen was predeceased by her husband Al and daughter Sheila Lynn (Michel) Tessier.
She is survived by her daughters Donna (Ken) Davis, Lynda Curran Sandra (Jeremy) Gainsford, and Andrea Leal; grandchildren Stanley Curran, Angela Davis, Corinnea Normandeau, Carl Tessier, Marc Tessier, Andrew Leal, Ryan Leal, Matthew Gainsford, Anna Williams, and 22 great-grandchildren. One niece Gail McNaught and one nephew Donald Gray.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Loch Lomond Village – Dogwood House. Your kind, patient, caring, and professional service kept mom safe. She enjoyed living at Dogwood. You contributed greatly to her long life. Your unending help, and the honor guard as mom left the Village touched us and has provided a treasured memory. Thank you.
