Obituary
After a brief illness, Helene passed away peacefully at Hospice House Kelowna on November 14, 2022. She will be lovingly remembered by her surviving sister, Anna, and her 10 nieces and nephews: Karen, Robert, Shirley, Sandra, Marion, Graeme, Arlene, Bruce, Brenda and Mark. Helene was born on February 10, 1935 in a log cabin in Northmark, Alberta. The family moved to Kelowna when Helene was in Grade 10, and she finished her high school there. After graduation, on the advice of a friend, she applied for a job at the Bank of Montreal. This turned out to be a long relationship. As well as working at what is now the main branch in Kelowna, she provided vacation and other relief at Westbank and their sub-agency in Peachland, and when the new branch was opened in the Capri Mall. In the mid 1960’s she transferred to Main Office Saskatoon where she held various positions, the last as Savings Supervisor. In 1971 she returned to Kelowna, in part to be able to visit with relatives coming from Germany that summer, and to be closer to family in general. She accepted a job offer at Capri Branch, and while there enrolled in the Accountant’s training program, which position she later held. She managed the ADCON centre when it opened in 1983 until her retirement in 1989. While she did some travelling during her working years, the travelling ‘bug’ caught on, and together with her sister, Anna, and sometimes another friend travelled to various parts of the world. This is attested to by her many travel albums. She was actively involved in her church, in teaching Sunday School for many years, setting up the church library and held various positions with the Women’s Ministry, Financial Recording Secretary and Treasurer. She donated generously to many causes and volunteered with Heart and Stroke Foundation during the February door to door campaign and with the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program for over 20 years. She also participated in the Central Okanagan Naturalist Club, mainly in the Botany area. To the nurses, doctors and staff of Kelowna General Hospital and Hospice House, thank you for your care and compassion. A memorial service will be held at Kelowna’s Ridgeview Church (1097 Hollywood Road S.) on November 27th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Ridgeview Church Memorial Funds.
