Helen Serkowney 2022

It is with deep sadness that the family of Helen Serkowney (nee Slobodzian) announces the peaceful passing of our dear mother and grandmother on May 21, 2022 at Southbridge Pinewood long-term care home in Thunder Bay following a prolonged illness. She was 89 years young.
Helen was born on November 20, 1932 in Fort William, Ontario and grew up in Stanley. She is predeceased by devoted husband Walter Serkowney (2006) as well as sister Pauline Elcheson, brothers Steven and Joseph Slobodzian and parents Peter and Eugenia Slobodzian. She will be greatly missed by daughter Cynthia Baumann (Edmundt), grandson Matthew Baumann, son Rocky Serkowney (Deena) and sister Rose Elcheson as well as several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Helen was a remarkable woman dedicated, first and foremost to the wellbeing of her family, including many pets. She always showed kindness, caring, compassion and generosity toward others. This loving personality was complemented by a sparkling sense of humor with a laugh that lit up many a room.
Her ability to spread joy while working hard and helping others was demonstrated through her early employment as a food server and photo processor, culminating in her role as a proud wife, mother and grandmother. in addition to supporting and caring for her family at home, she found time to engage in various educational, volunteer, artistic and recreational pursuits. These included effectively advocating to assist the visually-impaired and making herself available, day or night, to meet the transportation needs of friends and family members (aka. “mom’s taxi”). She was also an avid fan of dancing and listening to country & western music. May her precious, vibrant spirit live on in all our hearts.
Helen will be transported from Blake Funeral Home at 200 May St. South in Thunder Bay on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 to St. Patrick’s cemetery where a gravesite service will be held with family and guests at 1:00 pm. Visitation will be from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at the Blake Funeral Chapel.
Charitable donations can be made to the Thunder Bay Humane Society or your local animal shelter.
