Helen Marie Bertha Carr, born March 14, 1923, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of family on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 99. She was the beloved daughter of Frederick (d. 1980) and Rose (nee Froso, d. 1945), and loving wife of the late Robert (d. 1975), she was predeceased by her brothers Fred and George, and her sister Marie. She was the loving mother of John (Maryanne), Karen Kirk (David, d. 2014), Stephen (Beverly), David (Suzanne), and the late Paul (d. 2002), Thomas (d. 2017) who is survived by his partner Jean, Mark Oerline, and Victoria Guy (d. 2001).
A dear Nana to Jennifer, Heather (Dallas), Stephanie (Bryce), Jackie (Joshua), Nathan (Sarah), Michael, Jennifer (Bruno), Cathy (Jeff), Steven, Tanya, Justin, Erin, Ryan (Shefali), she will also be greatly missed by her great grandchildren Tyan, Melaya, Annessa, Isabella, Helena (Lena), Brie, Gunnar, Evan, and Xavier.
Helen grew up in Owen Sound, Ontario, and moved frequently around western and southwestern Ontario with her parents. She married her husband Robert in 1946 and finally settled in Kitchener in 1951 and became a fixture of the community for more than 70 years. Helen’s career saw her working at Mitchell Button, Jamiesons Billiards, and Forsyth Shirt Company in many roles as she tirelessly provided for her children. She always instilled the importance of education, frequently staying up late to ensure she could help with homework.
Helen was a long-time fixture of Ontario’s lawn bowling and 10-pin bowling communities, and frequently acted as a mentor to new bowlers, and bowlers with disabilities. She was a frequent coach, and travelled to many Canadian and World tournaments, impacting countless lives with her encouragement and support. Beyond bowling, Helen was an avid card player; from Euchre to Skip-Bo, she played any chance she could get, even building her own game rules to increase the challenge or lengthen the game for new and experienced players. While she didn’t play baseball, Helen was an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan, and frequently travelled to Florida to watch their spring training games.
Helen’s life will be celebrated from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 16th, 2022. Cremation has taken place. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario would be appreciated by the family as an expression of sympathy, and cards may be placed by calling 519-749-8467 and will be available at the Henry Walser Funeral Home.
