It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear mother, nanny, granny nanny, Helen Genevieve (Muttart) Connolly, age 93 on Wednesday, September 7, 2022. Helen was predeceased by her loving husband, Preston Connolly (1979), and dear son David (1992). Helen will be greatly missed by her children, Paula (Bob) Forbes, Jacqueline (Stephen) Lancaster. Loving Nanny to Jennifer (Mike), Bob (Heather), Nick (Isa), Nicole (Ryan). Granny nanny to Ella, Ian, Sean, Ethan and Chloe. Helen is the last of the Muttart family, predeceased by her siblings; Hilda (Wilfred) Farrell, Doris (Bert) Noonan, Elsie Muttart, Freda (Wes) Gunning, and John (Helen) Muttart. Missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Predeceased by her special cousin Everett and his wife Freda Muttart. Dearly missed by the extended Muttart family in PEI. Missed by her sister-in-law Norma (Connolly) Noonan and predeceased by Preston’s siblings: Kay, Charlie, Ralph, Marion and Richard.
Helen was born in Albany Prince Edward Island to John and Lavina (McVarish) Muttart. She was orphaned at age seven. Helen developed a strong determination and will. She completed high school at Kinkora Convent then enrolled in Nursing at Prince County Hospital and graduated as a registered nurse in 1951. She moved to Truro, Nova Scotia and then to Toronto. Helen worked as a St. Elizabeth Visiting Nurse, then at St. Joseph’s, Women’s College, Toronto General and Sunnybrook hospitals.
Helen met and married her husband, Preston (an Islander) in 1955. The door of their home was always open and hosted many an Islander gathering. The family moved to Burlington in 1973, where she nursed at Brantwood Manor. After 45 years she finished her career at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Hamilton. Helen loved nursing, she had a charism for providing her patients with dignity, care and compassion. Helen loved her family, and tragically lost her son David too soon at age 26 and husband Preston at age 49. We are happy these three are now reunited in heaven.
Helen loved her grandchildren, always attending their activities, taking them shopping and out for their favorite meals. She loved her animals; cows, cats, dogs and feeding the birds, squirrels and raccoons.
With God as her strength, Mom was an incredible woman whose caring spirit for others was visible in her work, family life and friendships. Helen’s independence propelled her forward and inspired those she touched. Helen struggled with dementia in her last years. She was lovingly cared for at Ridgeview Long Term Care. Our family would like to thank all the staff, and nurses, including: Anna, Glenda, Donna, and the PSWs, too many to name, for their support of Helen and our family over the years.
Visitation will be held at Bay Gardens Funeral Home (947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton, ON) on Tuesday, September 13 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Vigil prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral Mass will be offered at Our Lady of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 14 at 10 a.m. Reception will follow immediately after mass at Bay Gardens with a private family burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to The Good Shepherd Centres, Juvenile Diabetes or CNIB Guide Dogs in memory of Helen.
