LICHTI, Harland Michael – Passed away peacefully after a short battle with lung cancer at the age of 81 years on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at the Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto. Born on May 14, 1941 in St. Jacobs, he is survived by his wife Marie-Anne (née Besse); his sons Thomas Lichti and his wife Kim (née Gray) of Erin, their children Kennedy and Nicholas; and Michael Lichti and his wife Dianne (née Woodhouse) of Toronto, their son Bennett; and by his brother Robert Lichti of Waterloo. Harland is predeceased by his brothers Arthur, Ross, Enos and Vernon and by his sister Marlene Drummond.
Harland was a graduate of the University of Waterloo, playing on the varsity hockey team during his time there. After earning his teacher’s certificate, he spent his entire 35-year career as a Phys. Ed. teacher at Mount Forest District High School. During a sabbatical early in his teaching career, he spent a year playing semi-professional hockey in Villars, Switzerland, where he met Marie-Anne. Knowing that she was the one, they were married in 1968 and returned to Canada to spend the next 54 years happily together. Harland was an active member of the community in Mount Forest, having coached a generation of students in a multitude of sports. Harland was well-known for his thriftiness, as his family and friends can attest to.
A Celebration of Harland’s Life will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2022 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, Mount Forest Branch #134, 140 King Street West, Mount Forest. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Harland are asked to consider the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Society of Canada. England Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements.
