December 7, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta
Gwen Iris Gover, beloved mother, wife, grandma, daughter, sister, and friend passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at the age of 93 years.
Gwen was born to Albert and Madeline King on January 22, 1929 in Calgary, AB. Gwen grew up in Calgary, attended Stanley Jones School and Western Canada High School. Gwen was a member of St. Michael’s and All Angels AYP Theatre Group where she and her future husband performed multiple plays and made many lifelong friends.
Gwen enjoyed travel. She spent a year abroad with her husband, cruised to Alaska, and spent many summers camping with the family on the West Coast. In more recent years, she enjoyed traveling to Sorrento, BC with family and dipping her toes in the lake.
In April 1954, Gwen married Lloyd William Gover. They brought up three children and Gwen lived in the same house until the day of her passing.
Gwen was an avid lover of arts and music and supported local ballet, opera and theatre for many years. She worked as a secretarial/administrative assistant for the Calgary Board of Education. She played and taught classical guitar and was a member of the Confederation Park ukulele group. She was an active member and volunteer for the Confederation Park Seniors. Throughout her entire life, Gwen was an amazing seamstress and would make her own clothes and hats as well as gifts for others. In her later years, she learned some watercolour art at Sorrento Centre.
Gwen had a very strong faith and was a lifelong member of the Anglican Church. She taught Sunday School and directed many Christmas pageants along with sewing all of the costumes.
She will be most remembered for her kindness, generosity and friendship. Her family and friends were very special to her and she treasured them all.
As I Go On my Way
My life shall touch a dozen lives
Before this day is done,
Leave countless marks for good or ill,
Ere sets this evening sun …
This is the thought I always think
The prayer I always pray:
(Lord, may my life bless other lives
it touches by the way.)
-S. Gillilan
