HAWKINS, Gregory – Born in 1935, the only child of Vera and Harold Hawkins, Greg grew up in Parkdale and enjoyed sharing wonderful memories of his life, enriched by a diverse group of friends. His recovery from polio was aided by an outpouring of support from family, teachers and his many friends. The academic and extracurricular opportunities offered during his elementary and high school years prepared him for success at Victoria College, University of Toronto. A post-university summer tour of Britain and Europe with three friends enriched his life and further expanded his horizons.
The next chapter began with a position offered by Bell Canada, marriage to Margaret Rodman and the birth of their children, David and Linda. After seven years with Bell Canada, the decision was made to leave the company and settle in Toronto which allowed the children to have a loving relationship with their grandparents. The transition to teaching led to a fulfilling career of 32 years. He was a gifted teacher, a mentor to his students and to the members of History Departments which he headed.
The decision to join The Weston Golf and Country Club led to another expansion of the circle of friends and interests. Active in golf and curling as well as in committee work, the years at Weston were a meaningful addition to life in Toronto for many years.
Changes in his personal life included the sadness of divorce as well as the pleasure of his children making successful lives of their own. He delighted in his grandchildren and great grandchild. After a full life in Toronto, the decision was made to move to Guelph. Life in The Village by the Arboretum offered the opportunity for new friendships, many activities and participation in the vibrant cultural life of the community.
The short, final chapter was written at Hospice Wellington. We are so grateful for the excellent, compassionate care of the staff and volunteers. Greg’s quality of life was greatly enhanced by their kindness and good humour. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hospice Wellington will be much appreciated. Arrangements entrusted with Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin Street, North, Guelph. Online donations and condolences can be made at www.gilbertmacintyreandson.com.
His was a life well-lived. We are so grateful for him and will miss him always. He is survived by his wife, Anne Bridel, his children, grandchildren and great grandson.
