Obituary of Grace I. Thomas (nee Cattanach)
Thomas, Grace I. (née Cattanach), RN, B.A., of St. Thomas, passed away peacefully at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Sunday, July 17, 2022, in her 95th year.
Wife of the late John R. Thomas (1995). Mother of Rob Thomas (Sally), and step-mother of Bill Thomas (Susan), and the late Loretta Kotevich (Bill). Grandmother of Steven, Katie, Kyle, Michael, Sean, and Elizabeth. She was the sister of the late Mary MacNab. Grace is also survived by her nieces, nephews, and their families.
Born in Southwold Township, December 8, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Martha (née Turley) Cattanach. A Registered Nurse, Grace graduated from the Memorial Hospital, St. Thomas in 1948. She worked and taught at the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital, followed by a long career teaching nursing at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital and the Fanshawe College School of Nursing. Grace was a graduate of the University of Western Ontario. She was a valued member of Knox Presbyterian Church, St. Thomas, and volunteered for many organizations following her retirement from nursing.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place, and interment of her cremated remains will be made in Elmdale Memorial Park. A service to celebrate Grace’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation, the Canadian Cancer Society, or the charity of one’s choice will be gratefully acknowledged. Arrangements entrusted to the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160).
