Obituary
ACKER, Gordon Wayne – 72 of Shelburne, NS, passed away at home on Thursday September 15th with his family by his side.
Wayne had a strong work ethic which he instilled in his Children and he tirelessly provided for his family. When married in 1975, Wayne was working at Shelco (which closed the day before he married Brenda), he then went back to painting houses with Wally Bruce. Wayne then started working at family owned and operated Shelburne Dry Cleaners. He also worked at Vernon D’eon Lobster Plugs (Shelburne), Woodworkers Home Hardware, J&H Industries, and later retired from his position as assistant caretaker at Islands Park in Shelburne.
Wayne’s carpentry skills are to be noted, as he crafted washer boxes, lighthouses, and various other items. All he needed was an idea or a picture of what he had to build and he made it with ease. He also enjoyed walking through the town with his walking stick, tending to his garden, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, going for drives and seeing new places around Nova Scotia. He spent many evenings playing cribbage and cards with his wife to pass the time together. He was a selfless, caring, kind and understanding soul who was often quiet, but when he spoke it was words of wisdom. His favourite saying was ‘It will change before it gets here’, and he was often correct.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 47 years, Brenda Jean Acker(nee Lamrock), his son Gordon Dwaine (Yarmouth), his daughter Belinda Joyce & Ralph Cox(Jordan Falls).
In addition to his loving family he is survived by his sister Barbara (Irvin) Buchanan, West Green Harbour, his brother, Maurice George Jr. (Elizabeth), Sandy Point, as well as brothers in law, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Wayne is predeceased by his Mom, Elsie Mae George, his step father, Maurice George Sr., his sister, Brenda (Swansburg) Acker, & his daughter in-law, Anastasia (Nimchuk) Acker.
The family would like to thank all those who visited with Dad, VON Canada who provided excellent care so he could stay home, and a special thank you to Karen Hartley who helped him immensely. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Shelburne. As per his wishes there will be no visitation or service. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Wayne’s name to the VON Association.
