Gloria’s Obituary
Passed away on April 26th, 2022, Gloria Kaye Locke, at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Edmonton, AB, at the age of 70 years.
Gloria (mom) was born in St. Antony, Newfoundland and she was the oldest of 4 children born to Ethel and Ralph Gillingham. As a child Gloria enjoyed playing on the beach and spending time with her friends. Her favourite childhood memory was the time she and her younger brother Ralph got cardboard boxes to slide down their staircase. Ralph got scared and didn’t know if they should but she gave a push and away they went. There were a couple of bruises and an angry mother so that idea was not attempted again.
At the age of 16, Gloria went to Church Army for a year, and the church continued to be a very important role in her life to the end. After graduating high school Gloria started teaching in Long Island, NL where she met her husband George Locke of 47 years until his passing.
Gloria is remembered by her children: daughter Heather (Wally); sons: Hurley (Marie) and Jordan (Makayla); and niece/daughter Naomi (Peter); 10 grandchildren; brother Milton; and aunt Sophia (who was like a second mom); as well as a circle of extended relatives and friends.
She was predeceased by: husband George; parents Ethel and Ralph Gillingham; brother Ralph; and sister Norma.
Gloria loved teaching, later loved being a stay at home mom, and then postmaster in her later years until she retired.
One of her favourite memories was with her best friend Ida on a winter outdoor cook up over an open fire where they enjoyed moose meat and lots of laughs. Gloria was known for her infectious laughter that brought smiles to many. She stated “don’t spend your time crying, just laugh.”
A funeral service will take place on Monday, May 9th at 12:00 PM from St. James Anglican Church, Port au Port East. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Friends and family not able to attend in person are invited to attend over Zoom. Entry No. 87523989361.
