Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and unbounded love that we announce the peaceful passing of Martha on November 14, 2022, at the age of 78 years, after an admirable and courageous battle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Despite her recent health challenges, Martha was always more concerned for others than for herself. She placed others first and this characterized how Martha lived her life each day. We are comforted by how many were blessed to have known Martha and experienced her generous caring soul, kind heart, and compassionate nature.
Affectionately known as Martha, Martita, Marta, Mommacita, and Abuelita, Martha will be lovingly remembered by her three sons, Rene (Rachel), Paul, and Dean (Gillian); along with her seven grandchildren Jack, Sam, Luke, Paloma, Quinn, Madeline, and Sophie, as well as numerous loved ones and cherished friends.
Martha was born in La Paz, Bolivia on August 23, 1944. She was the daughter of Hiroshi and Flora Amano and had an older sister, Gloria. Martha married Wayne Chayer in 1967 and started a family in Bolivia with relocations taking the young family to Panama City, Montreal, QC and eventually settling in Calgary, AB. Martha was first and foremost a dedicated and loving mother. After a number of years of building a beautiful household and caring for her three sons, she worked diligently to overcome the challenge of speaking English as a second language and earned a position with the Calgary Catholic School Board as a teacher’s aide. She worked in the school system for several years, building her skills and abilities until obtaining a purchasing role with Mount Royal College. Drawn to her desire to be involved with her church, she became Parish Secretary at St. Pius X Roman Catholic Parish, where she finished her administrative career.
Martha will be remembered for her dedicated faith in the church, her caring, loving nature, and her unwavering devotion to her family and friends. With a natural ease, she engaged with anyone who crossed her path in an authentic, warm, and loving way. When she wasn’t making others smile with her habitual acts of kindness, Martha often turned her attention to her enjoyment of crafting, decorating, cooking, and taking care of her dogs. In her later years, Martha took the greatest delight and pride in watching her sons build their lives and families and most of all admiring all of her grandchildren as they grew and matured.
A Memorial Service will be held at St Pius X Roman Catholic Parish (2424 24 Avenue NW, Calgary, AB) on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at 11:00am. Reception to follow.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to Martha’s neighbors and residents of Chaparral Estates for all their support both socially and spiritually in recent years, her pulmonologist, Dr. Charlene Fell, as well as the entire team of health care providers at South Health Campus and Southwood Hospice Care Centre.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Glimia Martha Amano Chayer August 23 1944 November 14 2022 (age 78)..
