Obituary
Gladys was born on April 13, 1929, in Wadena, Saskatchewan. She lived in Archerwill, Saskatchewan until 1944, where at the age of 15 years, she moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba, where she was employed for 4 years. Gladys then moved to Alberta in 1947, where she met Buster Monkman. Buster and Gladys were married on June 29, 1948.
Gladys was predeceased by her mother Ida, in 1965; her husband Buster in 1982; son Billy in 1983; grandson Jason Monkman in 2009 and her lifelong friend Maxine Schlosser in 2018. Gladys has no surviving siblings.
Gladys is survived by her daughter Kathie; sons Brian(Shirley) and Bob(Peggy). Her grandchildren Clayton, Kylie, Karly(Conway), Jace(Brandy), Nicole and Whitney(Riley). Her great-grandchildren Jayden, Graysin, Jaxson, Mikah, Rhianna, Ty, Jordi and Kayler and great-great grandchildren Everlee and Lily.
Gladys was a life long member of the Royal Purple Ladies of the Elks. She managed the Nanton Golf Course Pro Shop and Concession/Restaurant from 1976-1980. Gladys was a long time sponsor and a volunteer with the Canadian Girls Rodeo Association. Gladys and her friend Georgie McWilliams were Citizens on Patrol in Nanton for 10 years.
Gladys worked very hard raising her 4 children, and cooking for the ranch hands on the beautiful Monkman Ranch, west of Nanton. In 1986, Gladys moved to a lovely home in Nanton, where she took part in making her garden beautiful. In 2014, she moved into the Nanton Silver Willow Lodge, where she loved the staff and settled in quickly. In November of 2021, Gladys was placed into the Willow Creek Continuing Care Hospital in Claresholm until her passing.
Gladys fondly named “Ma” was a very kind and generous little lady with a sense of humour, whom was loved by everyone! She was a nurturing Grandma loved dearly by all her grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday May 4, 2022 at 1:00pm, at the Nanton Baptist Church.
A reception will occur following the service in the Nanton Baptist Church.
