Mill Creek.
It is with loving and broken hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our mother Gertrude Laffin, at age 92, on Monday May 30, 2022, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her family. Born in Alder Point on June 7th 1929, she was the daughter of the late Victor and Celina (Walker) Roland. Mom worked as a waitress for many years at Texaco Restaurant, Bras d’Or, and Lobster Pound Restaurant, North Sydney.
Mom was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or. She was a past President of the C.W.L and an Associate Member of the Sisters of Saint Martha for many years. She attended Bras d’Or Prayer Group and taught religion classes in her home, which she enjoyed so much. She was a Lector and a sponsor with the R.C.I.A for many candidates. She was also a member and President of the St. Anne’s Society in Alder Point.
Mom was a member of T.O.P.S Club in Florence for 50 years, where she made many special friends during this time. She also loved swimming at the Northside Community Pool and Grove’s Point Beach with her swimming friends. If she wasn’t with friends, Mom loved being surrounded by her family who she adored with all her heart.
She is survived by her sons, Greg (Betty), Doug (Margo), Anthony (Cathy), Hughie (Betty), Gerard (Michelle), Blaise (Jacqulyn) and her only daughter Michelle (Joe Glen Carey). 16 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
She also leaves behind her sisters Louise Confiant, Jeanette Vaughan and brothers Lawrence (Gerri) and Nicky (Nancy), and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mom was predeceased by her loving husband of 71 years, Lawrence, son Glenn, daughter-in-law Rose, brother Earl, sisters Muriel Laffin, Eunice Carey, and Cynthia Simec, as well as her brothers-in-law Jim Laffin, Gerald Confiant, Jim Simec, and John Loos.
Special thanks to Dr. Alexander Wawer, the nurses and caregivers who cared for Mom at the Northside General Hospital, as well as Cape Breton County Homemakers that cared for her at home.
