Gerda’s Obituary
On November 14th, 2022, Gerda Hoetten (Wiesman) passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family and friends. In 1979, Gerda arrived to Tatamagouche from Hanover, Germany with husband Adolf and their five sons. She quickly become a well-respected member of the community. With limited English and an entrepreneurial spirit, they purchased the Balmoral Motel and proceeded to transform it into what is still known today as one of the best restaurants this town has ever seen. With class, style and limitless talents, Gerda managed her home and her business with what seemed like minimal effort. She was and still is admired for being hard working, a dedicated and proud mother, a loving wife and a true friend. Gerda could do it all and made it look effortless. Throughout Gerda’s lengthy battle with kidney disease, she has maintained many close friendships but has also gained the love and affection of many, most importantly that of her nurses. A special mention goes to the hard-working nurses without whom this journey would have been very different. They became like family and sat by Gerda’s side until the very end. For them the family will forever be grateful.
She will be dearly missed by her sons, Rüediger, Achim, Reiner (Winnie), Thomas and Rolf, her twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Adolf, three sisters, one brother, daughter Heike and granddaughter Alyssa. According to Gerda’s wishes there will not be a funeral but please join us in a celebration of life which will be announced at a later date.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
