Surrounded by family in his final days, Gerry Graham, at 76 years old passed away on the evening of September 6, 2022, in the Cedar Valley log home which he was instrumental in building. It became the family homestead where many special memories were made.
Gerry was born to Marie and Howard Graham on November 29, 1945, in London, Ontario. He grew up with an older brother and sister in the west end of Toronto. He attended Richview Collegiate High School and after graduating was accepted at a highly rated school of fine arts in New York. His father never thought that anyone could make a decent living as an artist. However, much to his chagrin, Gerry enrolled in a fine arts programme at the University of Windsor. In his first year he also took an elective in economics and much to his father’s delight, he transferred into business. He went on to spend 40 years building a successful career as an investment pension fund manager, and at one point performed for 10 years in succession in the top 10% nationally.
Gerry accepted any challenge life handed him with humility and determination. Because his work involved doing many presentations, he joined a public speaking group called the Tuesday Literary Club of which he was an active member for many years. Also, for work, he became fluent in French and enhanced his writing skills by taking English courses.
After retiring, Gerry picked up his paintbrush again, mastered all mediums and demonstrated a special gift for doing portraits. His interests were far ranging and included travel, snow and water skiing, horseback riding, back country camping and photography. He had a special passion for golf and sailing. Gerry had a zest for life and lived every day to its absolute fullest.
Gerry was a deeply loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. Family was more important to him than anything. He is survived by his beloved wife Cathy, children Eric (Nicole), Shelley (Lou), and Dane, grandchildren Ethan, Gianni, McKenna, Lauchlan, Veronica, Finlay, and Anthony, his brother Roger, sister Connie and by his many nieces and nephews.
Gerry treated everyone he met with a kind and open heart. His sense of humor and contagious optimism made it a pleasure to be in his company. No matter how dark the skies he could always see the sun peeking through the clouds. Gerry will be greatly missed by all those who had the privilege to know him.
A funeral mass will be held for Gerald at St. Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Church, 10295 Yonge St, Richmond Hill ON L4C 3B9 on Friday, October 14, 2022, at 10:30 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada or to the Southlake Hospital Foundation.
