Gerald’s Obituary
AMIRAULT, Gerald Paul – On July 7, 1945, in Amirault’s Hill, the world was changed when Gerald Paul Amirault (the second) was born. He was the son of Paul and Angeline Amirault. A young man full of mischief, he was known for disassembling his father’s lawn mower to build a windmill while his parents were gone shopping in Yarmouth or falling through the P’tit Lac taking a shortcut on his way to school. He left home young in search of adventures and travelled to NB then moved to Montreal to work for the Marconi Company. It was there his first daughter Maryann was born, who was adopted by his sister Anne-Marie. He eventually came back to NS to work as a radio and TV repair man in Halifax and Yarmouth and married Marion in 1977. He was known as the Xerox Repair Man for much of the 80’s and then followed in his father’s footsteps working on the MV Bluenose until its retirement in 1997. His mischievous ways didn’t slow down as he “matured” and became a family man – his more infamous antics also involved his grandson David who was convinced Grandpère could talk to trucks and had magic powers. They once set off a homemade smoke bomb in Marion’s kitchen, much to her dismay. He spent endless hours putting his engineering skills to work in his shed. On any given day he could be found covered in grease and smelling of tractor exhaust but always with a smile on his face. He was fond of a good joke and loved to chat about his Acadian ancestry. He loved to be in the woods and on the water. He knew his Tusket River like the back of his hand. He never met a broken object he wouldn’t try and fix. He was usually successful, although the object would be forever imprinted with his modifications. Not afraid of a challenge, he celebrated the new millennium by returning to college in his mid-50’s and earning a diploma in Stationary Engineering, at the top of his class. He was a lifelong learner; teaching himself new mechanical engineering skills via YouTube. His biggest achievement may have been convincing Rose Emma to fall in love with him, and they spent 6 wonderful years together enjoying retired life by each other’s side. He was rarely an emotional man but he showed love in acts of service. He could always be relied upon to help with a repair project or give advice. He was a Friend of Bill since 1993 and active in the Association des Acadiens-Métis Souriquois. On June 5th, he walked into the Kentville hospital for an elective surgery a happy healthy man with plans of further restoring his beloved tractors and a myriad of other projects. He passed away peacefully with his family at his side in the early hours of Father’s Day, June 19, 2022. He was 76 years young. He was predeceased by his wife Marion, his parents and sisters: Claudette and Anne-Marie and a brother Gerald in infancy. He leaves behind daughters: Lynette Amirault (Tracey Brake) and Janine (Doug) Blades and stepsons Reg (Jacqui) Babibn and Derrick (Gloria) Babin. He leaves behind many grandchildren and great-grandchildren: (David, Matthieu, Jacob, Luke, Austin, Claire, James, Zita, Crystal, Emily and Grady) and countless nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved sweetheart Rose. He is survived by sister Renette (Russell) King and brother Raymond (Myra) Amirault. The family would like to thank the staff of the VRH ICU for the care they provided during his final days. Visitation will be held at Huskilsons Funeral Home, Yarmouth Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m., with prayers at 7 p.m. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 27, 2022 at Holy Family Church, Amirault’s Hill, Father Cyrille Assihou officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Donations in memory can be made to the Association des Acadiens-Métis Souriquois. You may sign the online guestbook by visiting www.huskilson.net
