Gerald ‘Jake”s Obituary
It is with sadness that the family of the late Gerald ‘Jake’ Dermott Sparkes announces his sudden passing at his residence in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL, aged 77 years.
During his early life Gerald moved from Clarenville to Windsor and worked at Grey River & the White Bear project. It was there that he met the love of his life Bessie Guy and together built a life together. They were married for 40 years until Bessie’s passing in 2010. Gerald, other wise known to many of his workers and friends as “Jake” was a very active individual that was employed with several companies through is working career, some of which were Curran & Brigs Road Builders around various parts of Newfoundland, Abitibi Price Limited, Come by Chance, & Stephenville as a contractor’s welder. After some time being employed by other companies Gerald then decided to go into business as a welder in the central Newfoundland region. During the period of 1996-2020 he worked with his son, Doug at Universal Fabricators Inc. until his retirement.
Gerald was also affiliated with the Boiler Makers Local 203 and the UA 740 Plumbers & Pipe Fitters.
Gerald was a man that cared deeply for his family and wanted to make sure that everything was look after for them. He was always there to lend a helping hand where needed.
During his life with Bessie and the children, he spent many a time traveling to and from his home town in Clarenville where he would visit may of his family and friends. His favorite time was to go to the cabin with Bessie and his children in Phillip’s Head. He loved to travel to Lewisporte to visit Pearce and Sylvia and go boating while there.
He will be dearly missed by all that knew him.
Gerald leaves to mourn with loving memories his children, Doug (Dinah) Sparkes, Sharon (Jeff) Samson; grandchildren, Angela, Emily & Jake; great-grandchild, Willow; siblings Donald (Lillian) Sparkes, Doreen (Leo) O’Rourke, Sylvia (Pearce) Vincent, Lance (Donna) Sparkes, Tony (Debbie Sparkes, Ken (Gwen) Sparkes & Lorna Sparkes (Mounah); as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is predeceased by his wife, Bessie; daughter, Tina Sparkes-Moores; parents, Ralph and Ann Sparkes; sister, Marion Talbert
There will be no public visitation or funeral service. All services will be private for family only.
