George Usitalo Saturday February 12th 2022

USITALO, George
1939-2022
George passed away peacefully Saturday morning, February 12, 2022 in his own home next to his loving wife of 60 years, Elsie. His son Craig and his three daughters Gayle (Ange), Kim (Ross) and Debbie (Dave) gave him more pride, fulfillment, and joy than both his long hockey career as a goal scorer and his 35-years on the Guelph Police Force combined. Seven beautiful grandchildren, Graydon (Marni), Luke, Carley (Pat), Kate, Jasie (Jerry), Hannah and Will, plus two great grandchildren, Nolan and Brooks, who were born this past October and both share George as their middle names. George will also be missed by his siblings, David (Margie), Dan (Pat) and Gary (deceased). This Sudbury born and raised man was very blessed. A 55-year parishioner at Holy Rosary, gave him the true meaning of life – family and faith.
George had 3 great passions in life: family, faith and winning. George’s competitive spirit inspired an impressive hockey career that would take him from Sudbury to Kentucky, Greensborough, Chatham and of course Guelph as a Junior A player. Although the NHL was close, the police academy called – a 35-year career ensued culminating in him becoming Deputy Chief. Friends described George in many ways – unique, warm, caring, generous, kind, loyal, and most of all humble, as he never expected anything from anyone but was always willing to help someone in need. At 57, after retiring, for the first time in his life, he bought a van strictly so no grandchild would be left behind. Whether it be hockey games, baseball games, or the cottage, he and Elsie never missed anything. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. His name will live on with the George Usitalo Memorial Tennis Tournament, played by his (competitive) family annually.
George’s family would also like to thank Dr. Will Ruddock, Dr. Christopher Morris, Dr. Jack Mistersaki, Dr. Valsez and all of the great staff at Grand River and St. Mary’s Hospital for the great care they provided.
As per George’s wishes, there will be a private celebration of life for family only. Cremation has taken place. If so desired, memorial donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Holy Rosary Building Renovation Fund or simply helping someone in need would be appreciated by the family.
