With broken hearts we announce the passing of George Robert Cunningham on Thursday, June 9, 2022 at Bluewater Health’s Palliative Care Unit. George was the much loved husband and best friend of Linda for 59 years. He was the loving father of Michael Cunningham and Leslie Dawson and beloved grandfather of Griffon Cunningham. He is also survived by a sister, Bette LaForest, of Quebec. George was predeceased by his parents, Bob and Gwen Cunningham, and his parents-in-law, Blair and Mary Spiers.
George retired as an accountant with Dow Chemical after a notable career and spent much of his retirement on yearly travels to Fort Myers Beach, Florida with an occasional trip to the Cayman Islands. A good part of his time was spent day tripping to antique malls and amassing collections. But his first love was the Sarnia Yacht Club, of which he was a life member, enjoying sailing and yacht club friends for 70 plus years. He acted as Treasurer of the yacht club for many years then spent his later years working on the dredge crew and the haulout and launch crews.
We are so proud of the man George was, especially the grace and dignity with which he lived out the last difficult years of his life.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Marshall Gowland Manor, including the friendly front door staff, the PSWs and nurses on Rose, the recreation and leisure staff and the dietary staff on Rose, all of whom provided laughs, a kind word, hugs, and constant care and support of not only George during his residency but also his family.
The family also wishes to thank Dr. MacSweeney and the wonderful staff at Bluewater Health Palliative Care Unit for helping George through his final transition in comfort and peace.
A memorial service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Tuesday, June 14, 2022 at 12:00 noon with visitation to be held two hours prior from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. Cremation has taken place.
As an expression of sympathy memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer Society – Sarnia Lambton or the Sarnia & District Humane Society (cheques only at the funeral home please).
