George Nick Barlott, 78, passed away peacefully in the early morning on January, 30, 2022, surrounded by the wonderful staff in his care home at Evanston Grand Village (EGV) in Calgary, Alberta. George was born on May 17, 1943, in Vegreville, Alberta to Sally and Peter Barlott. He was the oldest of four boys, and is survived by his brothers Paul (Debbie) and Tony (Val), and predeceased by his youngest brother, Alan (Georgia) and his parents.
George grew up in a farming community with many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was a member of the Ukrainian Canadian community. As a child he participated in church and community events and, as a teen, George enjoyed DJ-ing at the local dances. After completing high school, George became an Ordinary Seaman in the Navy, he then went on to achieve his real estate, banking, and life insurance broker licenses. Further, he became the President of the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Edmonton.
George met his beloved wife, Christine in Kelowna. They settled in Sherwood Park, where George grew a successful business in life insurance and financial planning. Both George and Christine enjoyed the adventures of relocating and starting anew. Over the next few years they would build 3 more houses in Sherwood Park, one in Nanaimo, and lived in Duncan. However, the birth of their first grandchild brought them to their final destination, Calgary. Eight grandchildren were born over the years, for which George felt such pride: Kendra, Duncan, Quinna, Ethan, Tye, Marlee, Reese and Lexie.
George loved to drive, whether country roads in Alberta for work, or for vacation. He and Christine drove the east and west coast of the U.S., across Canada and through part of the Sahara Desert while on their trip in Egypt. With George’s curiosity and friendly nature, they made friends as they traveled, and always had interesting stories to share when they returned home.
Over the last decade, George remained positive and optimistic as he experienced the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. He was able to live at home with Christine until just over a year ago when he moved into EGV. George enjoyed much of his time at EGV; especially his daily visits from Christine. He also enjoyed playing practical jokes with the staff. His family is grateful for the exceptional care and support from the staff at EVG.
George is survived by his wife, Christine, his daughters, Leanna (Colin) Young and Laurie (Robin) Hutchinson, and stepdaughters, Nicola (Sandy) Gradnitzer McNabb and Natalie (Stuart) Young, and his grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
