March 13th, 1951 – September 29th, 2022
On September 29th, 2022 in St Boniface’s Palliative Care, Gareth Owen Lewis passed away peacefully after a hard battle with Cancer. He was 71.
Gareth is predeceased by his father, Daniel Lewis and his younger brothers Richard and Lance.
He is survived by his wife Jennifer (nee McConnell); mother, Hazel; younger sister Rosemary; sister-in-law Laura McConnell; daughter Jennifer (Corey); son Colin (Jess); step daughters Ariel Fleischman (Anthony), Betty Barnett(Aaron), and Ellie O’Keefe; niece Cassidy Dommes (Joe); and grandchildren, Dorian, Riley, Cassandra, Benjamin, Elliot, Hunter, Jude, Vali, and Ash. He also leaves behind many other extended family members and beloved friends.
Gareth Owen Lewis was born on March 13th, 1951, in Swansea, Wales. The eldest of the siblings, he was loved for his sarcastic wit, his dark sense of humor and the care he showed to those he loved. The family moved to Canada from Wales in 1966 and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He met and married his first love Heidi and raised their two children together in the West End of Winnipeg, before they split but remained friends throughout their lives. He worked for Imperial Eastman for many years before going back to school to upgrade his education. He subsequently worked at Canadian Tire in the Hvac department before moving into Hospitality/Maintenance at the Place Louis Riel hotel. He continued to work at the PLR, making many important and lifelong friends, until the hotel closed.
The PLR was also where he met his love Jennifer and after many years and distances, finally married her on May 18th, 2019. Despite being separated by international borders, they shared many years, laughs, tears, memories and a deep love. He touched many lives in his years and there are no words to express how much he will be missed.
Our thanks go out to the wonderful staff at St Boniface Palliative Care hospital for their dedicated care in his final days. As per Gareth’s request, there will be no formal funeral service, but the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either CancerCare Manitoba or to the Winnipeg Humane Society in his memory.
Let Me Go by Christina Rossetti
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no rites in a gloom filled room
Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that once we shared
Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone.
It’s all part of the master plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart
Go to the friends we know.
Laugh at all the things we used to do
Miss me, but let me go.
