Gilbert David Meakin, of Stratford ON died October 7, 2022, at Rotary Hospice at age 86. He was the beloved husband and soulmate of the Rev. Glenda Meakin, dearly loved father of the Rev. Julie Meakin (Giorgio) and Dr. Heather Meakin; Honorary grandfather of Rina and Cedric Koga-Tse, the children of Derek Tse and Keiko Koga-Tse; brother of Donald, Diana, and Geoffrey (DoraLynn) Meakin. Uncle of many nieces and nephews. Pre-deceased by his parents, the Rev. Canon JWR Meakin and Oriole Meakin, his brothers, Dr. JW Meakin, the Rev. Canon Allan Meakin, his sisters-in-law Geraldine, Asalyn and Jean, and his niece Jennifer.
David will be remembered as a gentle man of faith who loved the Church, enjoyed singing in the choir, exploring his faith, and attending both Christian Meditation groups at St. James.
For 34 years David taught high school history, most of those years spent with the York Region Board of Education. For a time, he served as a curriculum consultant to teachers. He enjoyed taking his students to historic sites across Canada and to Greece and Italy.
Retirement enabled David to volunteer as a Friend of the Festival for 13 years. He taught English to new Canadians, volunteered for Big Brothers, for L’Arche Community, and for St. James Food Bank. He was enthusiastic curler in the winter, and a year-round member of Tai Chi Group in Stratford. Retirement also allowed David to read and write poetry and he could still recite poetry he had learned many years before.
A highlight of David’s retirement years were the travels he and Glenda enjoyed – Many of them walking tours in England and Ireland; discovering the joys of Victoria, BC in the winter; and visiting Heather in the USA.
Funeral service will be held Saturday October 22, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at St. James Anglican Church, Stratford, followed by Interment of Ashes in God’s Holy Acre. A reception will follow at St. James Parish Hall.
