Obituary
George Clayton Thompson passed away peacefully at the age of 80 on July 2, 2022 following a brief illness.
Clayton was born in Elrose, Saskatchewan on February 24, 1942, the second of seven children to Roy and Alice Thompson. He grew up on the farm north of town, playing hockey, ball and helping out on the farm. He graduated from the Elrose Composite School and then attended technical school in Moose Jaw and Saskatoon. In 1971 Clayton purchased land at the base of the Coteau Hills southeast of Elrose from the Fry family and farmed and lived there until 2018. Clayton and his former wife, Joan (nee Brown) had three children, Nancy, Barry and Steven. Many hours were spent with his family at Angus cattle show and sales, music festivals, Cubs, ball tournaments, swimming lessons, driving through the pasture, at the cabin or helping out with house renovations and working on vehicles.
Dad loved the farm and being outside. He took great pride in doing a job well. He was good with his hands and could build or fix just about anything. If he built something it was built to last! “They don’t build things like they used to” was commonly heard. He could often be found driving through the country checking crops and cattle. He enjoyed fresh homemade bread, potatoes with gravy and pie with ice cream. He spoiled his grandchildren with Eggo waffles and Oreo cookies.
Dad moved to Hitchcock Bay in 2018. He rarely missed his daily walks around the resort, checking to make sure nothing was out of place. He became a regular at the Birsay Café and enjoyed his time there.
Clayton leaves behind his children, Nancy (Greg), Barry (Christine), and Steven (Tanya), and his 9 grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister Betty (Ed), brother David (Patti), siter Lois (Fred) and sister-in-law Cathy as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Russell, Raymond and Lyle.
A private graveside service will be held at the Elrose Cemetery followed by a come and go tea Thursday July 7, at 2:00pm at the Elrose Uniplex.
In lieu of flowers donations to the Elrose Volunteer Ambulance and Fire Department or STARS would greatly be appreciated.
