Obituary For Frederick (Fred) Robert Foley
September 13, 1939 – August 13, 2022
Fredrick (Fred) Robert Foley passed away peacefully on August 13, 2022, exactly one month short of his 83rd birthday.
Fred was born in Kinuso, Alberta on September 13th, 1939 at the beginning of the 2nd World War to Patrick and Velma Foley. Dad had 4 siblings, Hank, Pat, Dorothy, and Nancy. Times were tough, with Grandpa Foley being deployed to Italy and Grandma home with small children.
After Patrick and Velma separated and started new families, Dad’s extended family included step siblings Doreen, Patsy, and Lou on the Foley family side, and step siblings Linda, Roy, and Louise on the Gravel family side.
Dad moved to Edmonton in his early teens, and often talked of his time delivering milk in the city. Dad met mom, Alffa Bensmiller, in 1961 and they moved to Crooked Creek in 1962 where they lived in various acreages in the area. In the early sixties dad worked skidding logs and owned his own skidder and later hauled gravel with his own gravel truck. He worked many years in road construction with Park Brothers, Harringtons, and Debolt Construction. After years working on building roads he worked for GPRC training people to run heavy equipment just west of the farm north of Crooked Creek. Dad also worked a few years with Parks and Recreation Alberta and got to travel to lakes and rivers all over Northwest Alberta, which he loved.
Mom and dad bought the Crooked Creek Store in 1990 and retired after they sold it 10 years later at which time they bought the old farm place back from Joe Kramps. Dad loved camping, boating, playing games and fishing with family and friends. His fishing stories were legendary as the size of the fish he caught often got bigger over the years as he retold the stories.
Fred is survived by his loving family, wife Alffa, daughter Dione (Rick), sons Dwayne, Dean (Tracey), and Darren (Sharon), and four adoring grandkids, Jesse, Chase, Cole, and Shea, and one dear great grandbaby, Nya. Dad, thank-you for teaching us to appreciate family, respect others, work hard, and always be there to help family and friends. Please leave some of the big fish for us once in a while, we will miss you dearly, love all of us.
There will be a private family service only.

  1. Our sincere condolences to a
special family. We have always held Fred in high regard. His attentive service to his customers at the Crooked Creek Store were second to none. Our children remember him for the candy and gum he would sneak to them . He would fuel up our vehicle, wash all the windows, sneak the kids some candy, carry out the cardboard box of groceries and set them in the vehicle, all in such a gentlemanly manner. He left this world a better place….
