A big thank you to Jan Clarke for her thoughtfulness and help with the final arrangements.
Frances was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Herbert Joseph Benteau, and her first son, Herbert. She is survived by her six other children, Marie Braby (John), Roy (Elizabeth), Shirley Radonjic (Tom), Clem (Debra), Stella Cross, and Gary (Christine). She is also missed by nine grandchildren, Michelle, Terry, Jason, Elizabeth, Linda, T.J., Sarah, Mathew and Adam and seven great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Megan, Emily, Madison, Matthieu, Mitchell and Zoe. Frances is also survived by her youngest brother, Clem Lambe (Claudia), and predeceased by four other brothers and sisters, Mary Ann, Anthony, Evelina, and William, as well as her parents, Clement Joseph and Elizabeth Ann.
Frances was born in a fishing village, Lord’s Cove, NL and was raised in a humble family of six children. Their house was filled with love and happiness thanks to hard-working parents that valued family above all else. Frances and Herb moved to Nova Scotia after World War II and raised seven children in a loving home. All those that knew her could feel her love of her faith, home, and family. Frances loved traveling, whether it was for an audience with the pope in Rome, the Passion Play in Oberammergau, or visiting family in Lord’s Cove. Her Newfoundland roots showed in her love of good food, music, humour, and the best yarns. She moved to New Glasgow in 2013 to live with and get support from her daughter Stella. Frances started her day with a cup of tea, and we would love for you to enjoy your favorite beverage in her memory.
Frances was a long-term member of Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Dartmouth. She knew generations of parishioners and regularly volunteered with her dear friends Kay Hartt and Priscilla Kennedy. She was always busy with her work for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the Altar Society, and the Womens’ Society. Her favorite event was the Valentine Tea & Sale. Frances was also an avid knitter who poured her affection and attentiveness into her work. With every goodbye, whether by phone or in-person, Frances always had the last words. They were, “I loves ye.” We love you too, mom.
Excerpts from a poem written by her daughter, Marie Braby, as a tribute for her 90th Birthday best summarize our feelings for Frances:
I don’t know where we’d be today
If it weren’t for a mom like you
To show us strength, support, and love
Like only you can do
We love you more than words can say
With love that’s stronger every day
You are our source of inspiration
For you have our respect and admiration
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Frances Mary Benteau September 2 2022..
