Obituary
It is with deep sadness that the family of the late Frances Marks (nee Wiseman) announce her passing at the Western Memorial Palliative Care Unit, surrounded by the people who loved her, on May 15th, 2022 at the age of 92.
Leaving to mourn, to celebrate her life and carry on her legacy, are her devoted children Pat, Linda (Howard), Don (Rhonda), Larry (Kathy), Rich (Kim), Rob (Michelle), Marg (Jeff), and Liz; her grandchildren Ken (Patti) and Jason Batstone, Alexandra Marks, Evan Marks (Hilary) , Scott and Chelsea Marks, Laura Marks and Jacob Buffett, and her special great grandchild Cameron Marks; sister Vera Andrews (Bert), close friend Verna Kennedy, and a large circle of nieces and nephews.
Frances was predeceased by her husband Walter, parents Fanny May and Baxter Wiseman, and sister Margaret Sheppard.
Mom’s lifelong dream was to be a teacher, yet life circumstances meant that she taught her eight children instead of a classroom. She instilled in us a love of reading and a deep pride in Newfoundland culture. We will lovingly remember her every time we pick up a book or appreciate the beauty of Newfoundland that is around us. She was our greatest teacher.
Mom was born in Little Bay Islands on February 17, 1930. She moved to Corner Brook at the age of 15 and worked at Glynmill Inn until she met Walter and started her family.
Mom was a quiet, kind, person who had immeasurable love for her family and took great joy in the many meals eaten around her table with all of children and our families. She welcomed all our friends and fed them as only a mother can.
She was strong, smart, protective, and straight forward and could lay down the law, when necessary, though could never stay mad at us for long. We knew we were back in her good graces when she would come home with Kentucky Fried Chicken!
We thank Dr. O’Driscoll for his many years of kindness and care that he provided to Mom. We thank the staff at Intensive Care Unit who provided Mom’s care with respect and compassion. The staff on 4 A/B were kind and patient in ensuring her comfort and needs were met. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the staff at the Palliative Care unit who allowed our mother to pass from this world with dignity and grace.
As per her request, cremation has taken place. Friends and family can gather for visitation at Country Haven Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 17th, 2022, from 7 – 9 PM. A funeral service will be held at Country Haven Funeral Home chapel on Wednesday, May 18th, 2022 at 10:30 AM, with Father Jim Robertson officiating. Internment at Mount Patricia Cemetery to follow. We request that all visitors wear masks indoors.
While mom loved flowers, she hated lilies (she said it smelled like funerals!), she had requested that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
“Forever in our hearts”
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Frances Jane Marks February 17 1920 May 15 2022..
