Frances Beryl Gordon May 7 1932July 14 2022

With sorrow but continuing love, we announce the passing of Frances Beryl Gordon (nee Bowley) on Thursday, July 14, 2022 in her 91st year in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Beloved wife of Douglas for 69 years (Doug predeceased Fran on January 26, 2021); proud mother of Gayle Gordon Graham (John Graham) and Karen Gordon (Rod Mizak); and proud Amma of John A G Graham (Mira Breland) and Emily Graham (Kevin Anceriz).
Fran left employment to be a full-time mother on the birth of her first daughter. Homemaking was her forte, and she always ensured her daughters were well looked after. That continued when her first grandchild was born, looking after Johnny twice a week to support his parents’ work schedule.
Fran enjoyed knitting, crocheting, ceramics and supporting Doug in all his endeavors, whether it be home renovations, suggesting ideas for his woodworking projects, or the speed skating club. Fran also enjoyed watching hockey and football on TV, looking after Karen’s dog Toby, visiting with friends, reading and baking delicious desserts. The speed skating club was a major focus for many years and Fran quietly helped out in the background, ensuring officials were well fed at the skating meets and supporting fundraisers. Both her time in Gimli and with the speed skating club were the start of many lifelong friendships.
Fran brought her Icelandic heritage to the family with every summer spent in Gimli. Gimli summers were something she enjoyed growing up and she wanted that experience for her children and grandchildren too. As her children reached school age, the common pattern was to leave Winnipeg right after the end of school in June and not return until the day before school restarted. Her grandchildren also spent summer vacations at Gimli, continuing to drive back to visit Amma and Grandpa even after moving to Owen Sound, Ontario. And, of course, Islendingadagurinn with the parade and fireworks was always the highlight of the summer. Christmas and Islendingadagurinn were the two times Fran would serve her delicious vinetarta, baked from her mother Aurora’s recipe, and a very precious treat!
Fran lived the last year and a half at the Tuxedo Villa long term care home. She was content there and enjoyed the friendly staff, her meal tablemates Henry, Brad and Arlene, and playing bingo. She enjoyed in-person visits with her daughter Karen throughout this past year with Karen living in Winnipeg, and weekly video calls with Gayle from Owen Sound. This past June was a busy time for Fran, with visits from her whole family, including her grandchildren. Fran loved her family very much and was so happy to visit with them all! It is very special to her family that they had this recent time with Amma!
A special thank you to her niece Cindy Green and to Peter Baumstark for their kindness and support.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Fran’s life will be held next summer. Messages of condolence may be sent to the family through Bardal Funeral Home in Winnipeg.
