Eunice Marie Sheilds, slipped gently away on April 28, 2022. Eunice Marshall was born October 4, 1931 in Innisfail Alberta, first child of George and Grace, and first grandchild of W. George and Ellen Henley, and Arthur and Mary Marshall. Her arrival was quickly followed by her siblings John (Colette), Lyall (Emma) and her younger sister, Liz (Joe Millard) with whom she shared a special bond as well as a full raft of cousins, nieces and nephews who she adored. Through difficult times and the loss of her mother, she met Bertram Sheilds, and they married in Victoria, in 1955. Together they created their home and family with the birth of their daughter Laurene and the later arrival of their beloved granddaughter Paula. Paula was the light in her Euna’s sparkling hazel eyes, and together they created so much fun!
A long-time resident of Lake Cowichan, Eunice was a vibrant, feisty, deeply private woman, with a radiant smile that could light up a room and a laugh that was joyous. She found much happiness working as a dental assistant, first in Victoria and then at the Lake where she delighted in the people she met. In her retirement she, with Bert’s encouragement, turned her yard into a beautiful rhododendron garden with spectacular colours and gracious textures. Being home in Lake Cowichan brought her much joy and sustained her through her final days. A special acknowledgement to Dan (Barb) Longfield and Judy Brown, son and daughter of life-long friends (Bob and Lois) who provided much support. We mourn her passing but are also deeply grateful for her presence in our lives. We love you Mom/Euna and now you are at peace with your Bert.
Eunice was laid to rest at Colwood Pioneer Cemetery alongside Bert (2008), with an honouring tea to be planned in Lake Cowichan.
