Ethel Marie (Grant) Weatherby – 81, Bible Hill,
formerly of Harmony. On Thursday evening, July 21, 2022, after a long
battle with cancer, Ethel Marie (Grant) Weatherby passed away
peacefully at home in Fall River with her daughters by her side. She
was predeceased by her husband of 37 years, Joseph, and her parents,
Don and Helen (MacKenzie) Grant.
She is survived by her children, Krista (Matthew) Legere,
Fall River; Joey Weatherby (Erica Hayward), Bible Hill; Stacey
Weatherby (Kirk Fougere), Overton, Yarmouth County; her devoted
sisters, Carol (Bob) MacPhee and Ruth (Jack) Bakker, Harmony; brother,
Gary (Patti) Grant, Truro Heights; loving Nanny to Kiara Richard
(Cameron Rice), AJ Legere, Rowan Muise-Weatherby, Reese
Muise-Weatherby, Georgia Fougere; Aunt Ethel to many nieces and
nephews and neighbourhood kids who adored her.
Ethel graduated from Success Business College in Truro in
1959, and went to work at Sun Alliance Insurance until her first child
was born in 1967. She remained at home to raise her three children for
12 years, spending treasured time with her parents until their
passing. She then returned to Sun Alliance for the remainder of her
career, retiring when the business sold; she never called in sick once
during the combined 25 years she was there! Ethel made many lifelong
friends at Sun Alliance and looked forward to lunches with the girls
at The Engine Room.
Ethel was an active member of McCulloch United Church all her
life where she was a member of the choir, UCW and a church elder. This
was a passion she shared with her two sisters, Carol and Ruth, whom
the church family fondly referred to as “The Grant Girls”,
always seated up front in the choir together. After choir practice
every Monday evening, Carol, Ruth, Bob and Jack would come into
Ethel’s kitchen for a cup of coffee, a sweet treat and often
a game of wizard! The girls would laugh while Ethel argued
with their husbands!
The special bond Ethel shared with her sisters grew with
their multiple trips down south with extra family members in tow. She
loved to travel and when her granddaughter, Kiara, invited her on a
road trip to Newfoundland last summer she said yes! So after her last
immunotherapy treatment they packed up the car and headed for Herring
Neck to participate in their Dory Festival where she kissed the cod
and then on to St. John’s where she toured the historical
sites.
Ethel was an avid camper! She and her husband took their hard
top to PEI every summer for family vacation and spent many weekends at
Seafoam campground, and in later years, she accompanied her daughters
on their camping trips. Nothing gave her more pleasure than sitting
around the campfire chatting with family and friends.
Ethel loved history and had a particular passion for books
and documentaries on US Presidents. Her favourite by far was Kennedy
but when she ran out of books on him she turned to other Presidents.
She read Ulysses S. Grant Personal Memoirs twice!
As much as she loved her books, it was spending time with her
family that was her first love. There was nothing she enjoyed more
that hearing the laughter and chatting of her kids and grandchildren.
She once said part of the reason she never remarried after Dad was
that she didn’t want to share her time with someone
else’s family, but he was also her one true love, and she
never wanted anyone else. Ethel will always be remembered for her
warmth and kind generosity; a loquacious personality who enjoyed
people and an educated argument now and then. She was a wonderful
wife, mother, sister and friend and will be greatly missed by
all.
All are welcome to join in Ethel’s Celebration of
Life that will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at McCulloch
United Church, corner of Harmony Road and Camden Road. Interment in
Harmony Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ethel’s
memory to a charity of choice are welcomed.
