Estella Rushton 2022

Estella’s Obituary
Rushton, Estella Sarah Jean – 98 of Oxford, N.S., On October 6, 2022, our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend to many passed away at the North Cumberland Memorial Hospital in Pugwash with her family by her side. Mom was born in North Greenville, N.S., on May 17, 1924, the 8th child of Matilda (Ouderkirk) and Corey Moore. Mom was predeceased by her parents, our father Murdock in 2006; sisters Hilda (Bill) Embree, Hazel (Frank) Rushton, Helen (Clayton) Rushton, Opal (Roy) Selig, and brothers Floyd (Dorothy) Moore, Vernon, Griffin (Dorothy) Moore, Aubrey (Grace) Moore and Arnold (Helen) Moore. She will be much missed by her sister Vaunda Murphy (Earl) of Woods Harbour, and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She will always be in the hearts of her sons Michael (Theresa Woodlock), Fountain Road, NS, and Kevin (Pam Wiggins), Hong Kong; granddaughters Erin (Mat Maye), Binghamton, NY; Meghan (Michael Ackerman), Halifax: Jill (Alex McLeod), Bedford and Zackary, Toronto and five great-grandchildren, David, Margaret, Sam, Edie and Katherine. As one of 11 children, family was always important. She cherished every visit from her sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews and was most excited when her grandchildren and great-grandchildren visited. Mom also considered her friends at the Nazarene Church and her “Shuffling Group” as extended family. Shuffling up to her 96th birthday, the games were always a source of conversation during our visits. Mom welcomed everyone into her home with a smile and an offer of food. She had a quick wit and a wonderful sense of humour that always kept us on our toes. The one-liners were still coming even as she entered the hospital. With our father in the Armed Forces, our family was always on the move, Germany; Regina, Saskatchewan; Barrie and Kingston, Ontario. Mom was usually left on her own to pack up and prepare for the moves; however, after settling in Kingston Ontario, she landed a position at Queens University that she loved. She still receives cards, letters and phone calls from former staff and students. We want to express our appreciation to Dr. Blaikie and especially to the nurses and staff of the North Cumberland Memorial Hospital. They did everything possible to ensure our mom and the family were comfortable during our time there. In addition, we cannot adequately express our appreciation to mom’s nieces, Carol Embree and Kathryn Schlitt, for their love and support, especially over the past few weeks. We also thank her special friend Bonnie Keezer for her constant friendship, care and attention. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 12, from 3-5 p.m. at MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home, with the funeral service conducted by Rev. Jodi Getson at the Church of the Nazarene on Thursday, October 13, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Church of the Nazarene Big Lake Camp or a charity of your choice.
