Obituary of Errol Eric Grundy
GRUNDY – Errol Eric
July 11, 1932 – January 20, 2022
At 10:46 pm on January 20th, 2022, our father Errol Eric Grundy passed peacefully at his residence in Toronto.
Dad was 89 and lived a full, exciting and magnificent life. He is survived by his sons Martin (Diane), Eric (Valerie), John Henry and daughters Judith Holmes(Bill), Lori Grundy, Lynn Sacco. Grandsons Nathan, Jonathon (Amanda), Michael, Maxwell, Jordan (Tori) and Julian (Michelle), granddaughters Aly, Mercedes (Joseph), Katie, Megan and Olivia (Tyler), great-grandsons William, Zaiah, Kole, Xender and Zaiden, great granddaughters Adelaide, Zaelia and Emma. Predeceased by Betty, his beloved wife of 61 years, his son Gregg, his grandson Kol and his brother David. Born to parents David and Lily who immigrated from Bolton, Lancashire, England to Brantford, Ontario, Errol was a twin to Ronald, had an older brother David Jr, and younger twin sisters Jean and June. Dad met the love of his life, Betty Jean MacDonald, in Simcoe, Ontario when he was 16 and they married 2 years later in 1950. Dad worked for the Brantford PUC until he was 40 and then moved to Pass Lake, Ontario where his entrepreneurial spirit took flight, moving him to build state of the art greenhouses to successfully farm trees for reforestation projects. But the call to home, grew stronger and so retiring at 59, he and Betty sold their home and greenhouses to move back to West Brant in Brantford, Ontario. Travel was in their blood and when not visiting with family, they drove to their winter habitat in Florida, while their favourite trips overseas were to Portugal or to visit relatives in England. Dad was a kind, generous, witty person who loved laughter, music, reading, talking (to everyone), the outdoors and every now and then a nice glass of whiskey or red wine. He sang everyday, (often breaking into song in the most unexpected places), played accordion and harmonica and was truly gifted in reciting poetry by the volume, especially Robert Frost. He loved animals, doting on his last dog, which he affectionately named Forest. A true people person, Dad left a strong impression on all he met with his warm hello and a smile, but even stronger was his love of family. He worked hard to provide for his 6 kids but never missed taking them to Algonquin for a summer holiday, introducing them to his love of nature and explaining its many wonders. In later years he enjoyed summers in Muskoka with the extended family and friends. We wish to thank Dr. Carbonic of Mount Sinai hospital, his Assistant Nga and palliative nurse Nina for their care, along with the staff at Hazelton Place Toronto, and PSW Alona without whose assistance Dad would have been severely disadvantaged. A special thanks to our sister Judith, who gave all of herself to personally attend and bring great comfort to our father over the last 2 1/2 years of his life. Our father Errol is resting at McCleister Funeral Home and will be interred in Oakhill Cemetery with his wife Betty. Due to Covid, it will be a private service led by Rev Paul Silcox, of Grace Anglican Church in Brantford, but will be available virtually Thursday January 27 at 11 am by accessing www.twitch.tv/mccleisterfh for all who wish to view . In lieu of flowers, donations to Canadian Trees for Life at www.treesforlife.ca to honour Errol’s memory would be greatly appreciated. Our thanks to Todd and the McCleister staff for their care and to Rev Silcox for officiating the service.
‘I shall be telling this with a sigh
somewhere ages and ages hence:
two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less travelled by,
and that has made all the difference’
Robert Frost
Rest well Dad. We miss you dearly. Happy Days…
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Errol
