Ernie Babinchuk 2022

Ernie’s Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late David Ernie Babinchuk announce his passing at the Regina General Hospital on January 9, 2022, at the age of 72 years.
Ernie was born on January 13, 1949, at Yorkton, SK, to parents, William and Katie (nee Mostowy) Babinchuk.
He spent his first few years in Sarto, MB. In 1952, he moved to Hyas, SK, where he resided until his passing. Ernie attended Hyas school to grade 8 and then completed his high school education at Sturgis Composite High School. He was on the planning committees that organized their 30th and 50th class reunions.
Ernie worked with his father at Hyas Garage until 1987, when he took over the business. He took pride in making cars, trucks, tractors, combines, etc. run smoothly. He helped many people during his time in business. Ernie always had time to “shoot the breeze” or have a laugh or two. He also served over 20 years as alderman for the village of Hyas. Additionally, he was the manager of the Hyas Housing units for twenty years.
Ernie enjoyed sports. He was an avid curler in his youth. He enjoyed attending the Grand Slam events, Curling Club of Canada and the Brier with Bruce and Gladys. He also enjoyed watching baseball, hockey, and football, and was a dedicated Saskatchewan Roughriders fan. Ernie attended the air show in Moose Jaw twice – he really enjoyed seeing the Snowbirds and the stealth aircraft.
Ernie was a huge Elvis fan. He had all his movies and most of his records. His one regret was that he did not get to visit Graceland.
Ernie enjoyed many trips to Winnipeg and Thief River Falls, MN, to visit family. The last get-together with aunts and cousins was at Riding Mountain National Park. Many stories, laughs, and memories were shared. He also took a memorable trip to BC by train. He spoke often of this trip.
He loved animals, especially cats. He looked after Gladys’s cats many times. Tiger always like to see him. She would jump on him and pester him constantly. They shared many slices of pizza together.
Ernie had a kind and generous heart. He looked after his mother enabling her to stay in her own home until just months before her passing. At the time, he became an expert perogy cooker and an avid gardener. Weeding wasn’t his thing, but he did spend many hours picking potato bugs!
Ernie was always there for Gladys whenever she needed a helping hand or just someone to talk to. She will miss their daily phone conversations. Ernie will be greatly missed by Bruce and Gladys, their extended family, friends, and all who knew him.
He was predeceased by his parents, aunts, and uncles. He is survived by his sister, Gladys, brother-in-law, Bruce, cousins, and his extended family and friends.
A Private Graveside Committal will take place at the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK.
A Celebration of Ernie’s Life will be held in the Spring 2022. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the S.P.C.A. Saskatchewan, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Ernie Babinchuk.
