Ernest James Baggs, 75, passed suddenly surrounded by family. Ernest is predeceased by parents, John and Winnifred Baggs and brother Edwin as well as his parents-in-law Lucy and Cyril Dove; sisters-in-law: Margaret Baggs, Cecilia Hollett and Ella Dove.
Ernest leaves to mourn, with a lifetime of beautiful memories, wife of 56 years, Minnie, daughters Deborah (Jim) Slade, Jennifer (Darren) Hancock, Kayla (Stanley) Froude and Jessica (Scott Martin). Grandchildren: Janine, Tommy (Ryan), Logan, Lydia, Thomas, Sophie and Sebastian. Siblings: Bernice (Ford) Hibbs, Enos (Maisie), Louise (Roy) Parsons and Larry (Susie) and Arthur (Alice). As well as Minnie’s siblings: Oswald Dove, Rowena (Raymond) Hull, Alman Dove and Goldie (Doug) Bath. Ernest will also be missed by his large circle of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Ernest left NL in 1964 with his girlfriend Minnie, to move to Toronto. Ernest often spoke of having one goal when he went to Toronto; to make enough money to return to Twillingate and build his home and raise his family. They married in 1966 and had two daughters in Toronto before returning home to NL in 1973.
Ernest worked alongside his father at the family grocery store, John Baggs and Sons, and took it over when his father passed in 1985. He proudly closed the doors of his successful and well respected business in 2006.
His strong work ethic continued even after the closing of the business and so after a few odd jobs he joined Scott to jointly manage another business for the past 13 years. At 75 years old, he still jumped out of bed in the mornings with a desire to work. He spent his last days picking berries, and giving them away, enjoying the view from his home and spending time with family.
Ernest will be remembered for his quiet, dry, sarcastic personality and dry witt. His immense love for his family and pride in his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew him.
As a thoughtful expression of care and concern the family would like those visiting the funeral home and attending the funeral to please wear a mask.
