Ernest Wood 2022

Ernest’s Obituary
Wood, Ernest Emmerson “Woody” – 88 Born in Brookdale, Cumberland County passed away Thursday, December 22, 2022 in the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Tatamagouche surrounded by his wife Wavey and family. We wish to thank the amazing staff at the hospital for the extraordinary care he received, with special thanks to Dr. Robuck for her care beyond measure. In typical dad fashion he charmed them as well with many shedding a tear along with us. Dad grew up in Wentworth Valley, brought up by Neil and Mary Barclay. He spent the majority of his life in Westchester where he was a strongly involved community member, just celebrating 50 years in the Westchester Fire Department. He was a founding member of the department and therefore a historian for them. He was key in maintaining the fire trucks and equipment within the department and in later years when he could no longer go on calls, would man the department while the trucks were out. Dad was a mechanic by trade after attending night school but was intuitive when it came to repairing vehicles of all sizes and just about anything else he put his mind to. Over the years he drove a bus for Acadian Lines, maintained heavy gear for Musens Equipment and worked on the railroad (where he worked when courting mom). He was service manager for Scott Truck in Debert at its beginning in 1972 and was the last to close the door in 1981. During his last years he was a heavy-duty mechanic with Dexters/Municipal Construction in Bedford retiring in October 1999. Upon his retirement he then moved to a jack of all trades for many members of the community with a seemingly endless supply of both knowledge and parts to repair what was needed. To say Dad was a family man is an understatement, his love of mom was recognized by anyone who met them and his pride in his children was witnessed by everyone. Having a huge heart, he had lots of love for those around him, so many people loved and adored “Papa Wood”. We willingly shared our Dad with the community and all were welcome in our home. There is a long list of people that he loved and there is no way to capture them all, but he did want to mention his extra daughter Beverly who held a special place in his heart. He leaves behind to mourn this huge loss, the love of his life, his wife of 63 years Wavey Wood (Webb), his four children Peggy Ainslie (Peter), David (Carol), Gary (Annette) and Christa Brimicombe (Frank), 7 grandchildren Krista, Carissa, Kyle, Michael, Derek, Calum and Brady. He was predeceased by brothers Darrell Wood, Roy and Ross Barclay, sisters Doris Ripley (Wood), Marion Hunt (Barclay). Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 27th 4 – 6 pm with a service Wednesday, December 28th at 2 pm, all in MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home, 5075 Main Street, Oxford. A reception to follow at Westchester Fire Hall, 123 Valley Road, Westchester. Donations can be made to the Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital in Tatamagouche or the Westchester Wesleyan Church.
