Obituary of Elizabeth Yolanda O’Donnell
O’Donnell, Elizabeth (Landy) Yolanda
March 20, 1934 to April 21, 2022
Landy passed away quietly at home while fighting a courageous battle with cancer. Landy leaves us to join her husband James in a heavenly reunion. Predeceased by her parents Anna & Albert Edward, sister Sylvia Chinery and nephews Tony and Bruce. Landy leaves behind many close friends that will grieve her passing including Gloria and John Simon. Born in Capetown, South Africa and trained as a legal secretary, Landy moved to England to work. Landy travelled through the British Isles and Europe every chance she got. In June 1967 she immigrated to Canada at 33 where she settled in Toronto and met her husband, Jim. After a whirlwind romance they married that that November on Santa Claus Parade Day and were inseparable up until his death in 2013. Jim was known by his friends as a confirmed bachelor and were all surprised when at 44 he met the love of his life. Larndy referred to them as Tweedledee and Tweedledum, if you saw one of them you saw the other.
Landy resided in OakRidges north of Toronto with Jim from 1968 where they were actively involved in hiking and biking each day. They went camping all over North America until they became older when they went to elder hostels or on organized bus tours including to Portugal. Active in the Community Centre in Richmond Hill they went on bus tours, learnt to carve ducks and birds and practiced Tai Chi. August 2016, Landy moved to Port Colborne. Landy was an ambassador for Port Colborne and took every chance she had to inform everyone she talked to of all Port Colborne and Niagara Region had to offer. She never regretted making the move.
A person who embraced life, she had a captivating smile and infectious energy that made people feel comfortable and welcome in her presence. She was known for her bright fuchsia strip in her otherwise white hair. How many times she was stopped when out for people to comment on how at her age she was so trendy.
The first thing Landy did on arriving in Port Colborne was join the Harbour Lite Choir and Central United Church choir where she became a member. She developed a host of good loyal friends she felt honored to have. Landy loved adventure, she owned a motor scooter, played ball hockey, belonged to a roller-skating group in the 80s, cross country skied, went camping throughout Canada and the USA. In her 80s she was ziplining, enjoyed doing the CN Tower Edge Walk and regretted not being able to go sky diving in Burnaby.
Landy was very grateful for the wonderful care and support that she has received from Bridges and especially Dr Susini, Dr Marie Dion and her medical team. Many thanks to all the staff of Portal Village.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Arrangements entrusted to the ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 179 Clarence Street, Port Colborne. A Celebration of Life will be held at on May 2, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Central United Church, 30 Delhi Street, Port Colborne. Landy had requested that no black be worn, only bright happy colours.

Death notice for the town of: Port Colborne, Province: Ontario
I came to know Landy as a member of the Aurora Seniors’ Centre Evergreen choir, when she lived in Oak Ridges, and I was the piano accompanist of that choir. She was a great friend, we met before and after rehearsals, talked and laughed. She had a great sense of humour and was always very generous!
After she moved to Port Colborne we kept in touch, and during the Covid restrictions times we formed a Zoom choir, which she happily joined. I would see her face on the screen always with a smile. She sang the tenor parts with enthusiasm. She always had music on the radio when she was home. We shared the love for Classical music. Landy also learned ukulele with a group of ladies in Port Colborne. She said they were the ‘Ukuladies’.
Landy often mentioned Gloria, her good friend who took care of her till the end. She knew what was coming, and courageously prepared herself for it. I knew from Landy I would get a call from Gloria when the time came.
How sad she is gone! Landy will be greatly missed! ‘Always look at the bright side of life’ was her motto. I loved her dearly!
