With a heavy heart we announce the passing of Elizabeth Winter, known as Betty. She left us June 18, 2022, at the age of 89, peacefully slipping away.
Born January 6, 1933 in Victoria, BC, she lived in the Victoria BC area most of her life.
She is survived by her loving family, son David (Linda), daughter Kathleen Wallace, Grandchildren Jeremy (Tracie) Wallace, Darren (Andrea) Wallace, Andrew (Mary Ann) Winter, Kimberlee (Steven) Johns, Tami (Todd) Austin, Chris Corrigall, Lisa (Debbie) Crane, Great grandchildren, Abigail and Mya Winter, Rachel Wallace, Alana and Charlotte Wallace, Eleanor Johns, Marketta (Avery) Rankin, Brayden Austin, Kayden Corrigall and Coen Beland and Great Great Grandson Bowen Rankin. She is predeceased by her husband Arthur (2001) and Son Wayne (1996). She leaves many friends and extended family.
Betty married Art in 1950, and she lived in Leechtown as a young bride for 5 years, moving to Metchosin then to Glen Lake where she lived for over 50 years raising her family. With her husband, Art, they ran Happy Valley Freight until 1972.
She loved to travel and was very fond of cruising, especially with Holland America, to the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Hawaii, Alaska and Mexico, including a cruise aboard the Cunard Line, Queen Elizabeth 2. She also travelled to many countries in Europe, US, Mexico and to Ghana, West Africa to visit her son David in 1986. She also enjoyed gambling, slots mainly, with numerous trips to Reno, Las Vegas and Laughlin, and more recently to the local casino in Victoria.
Betty was a singer and entertainer from an early age singing on the radio as a young girl. In her younger years, she took parts in many musicals for the Victoria Operatic Society and entertained for 5 years at Butchart Gardens. She entertained on her own for many years, and then as part of musical groups entertaining throughout Victoria. She was a member of the Eastern Star organization providing music and leadership for many years.
The family would like to give special thanks to the Dr. Katharine McKeen and all the staff at The Heights at Mt. View for all their wonderful care and attention.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Parkinson Canada or charity of your choice.
A funeral service will be held in the Sequoia Centre, at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, B.C., on Friday, June 24th, 2022, at 1:00 pm, followed by burial at Hatley Memorial Park with reception at McCall Gardens.
