Obituary for
Elizabeth McKay “Betty” Campbell (Malcolm)
August 30, 1924 – December 3, 2022
Betty was the oldest of the four Malcolm girls born to J. Arthur and Nellie (MacKay) Malcolm in Brule, Nova Scotia. Betty grew up on a dairy farm and attended a one room school until high school. Then she went on to attend the Pictou Academy. She was a proud graduate of Pictou Academy. After this she then attended Mount Allison Ladies College in Sackville, New Brunswick.
She is survived by daughter, Susan Campbell (Brian Hagell), Beaver Brook and son, Malcolm (Pam) Campbell, Bass River; grandchildren, Jennifer (David) Talbot, Grand Lake, Halifax County and Jonathan Campbell of Bass River, and great grandchildren, Dylan Talbot and Zoey Campbell (and her mother, Brittany Lynn). She is also survived by her sister, Margaret (Don) Beeler of Brule, and brother-in-law, Ken Gilchrest of Edmonton. She was predeceased by sisters, Jean Gilchrest and Catherine (Cyril) Brimicombe, Truro.
Betty worked at various jobs but felt most rewarded during her time at Continuing Education where she helped many adults upgrade their education and move on to careers of their own.
Upon retirement, Betty stayed active with her church, First United of Canada in Truro, the CNIB and took many community courses of various topics.
Betty continued to work in radio as she raised her family. She worked with the Nova Scotia Home and School Association for several years where the association, the teacher’s union and the government of the day worked together to pass legislation that would benefit all students. Again, Betty made lifelong friends in the Home and School organization throughout the province and enjoyed the intellectual challenge of her job. During this time, she also did freelance writing and contributed stories and poems to Gage Publishing Company that were used in school textbooks.
Betty moved on to Continuing Education. She worked with the high school equivalency exams. At that time, she volunteered with various literacy programs helping adult readers develop their skills. This was her favourite job.
After retirement, she travelled extensively throughout Canada where she spent time visiting with her many favourite nieces and nephews. Betty loved her extended family and was proud of the many talents and accomplishments they had. She travelled to England and Scotland and shortly after the Chunnel opened between England and France, she took the train through the Chunnel to France.
All her life Betty loved to garden and spent many hours working in her beautiful flower beds. She would be in the garden at dawn long before the rest of us were up. She was also an avid cook and enjoyed making meals and her special dishes for family and friends. There are many retired schoolteachers across Nova Scotia who enjoyed meals at her home while in college. Her special carrot cake was a welcome addition to any school staff during birthday times.
The family of Betty wish to send a sincere thanks to the amazing friends and residents of Normandy Avenue. They were always there to help our mother at any time. We would also like to thank the staff at the Mira Nursing Home for their care while Betty was a resident there.
Visitation will take place in Colchester Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 9, 2022, followed by a funeral at 3:00 p.m. Cremation has taken place. Betty’s ashes will be placed in Lockerby Cemetery in Tatamagouche at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a Food Bank in your area.
