Elizabeth was born on January 28, 1936 in Upper Island Cove to James and Elsie Mercer. She married Baxter Collins on September 28, 1956.
How does one describe such an unassuming lady so small in stature but so large in character. Whether you knew her as mom, Mrs. Collins, sister, Aunt Beth, Betty, Lizzy, Nan, little Nan or nanny Betty – she always treated you in a graceful and compassionate manner. Those who knew her always appreciated her smarts, endless wit, faith, perceptiveness and loving nature. Simply put she epitomized what it meant to be “sweet”.
Elizabeth’s greatest joy was her extensive family including her husband Baxter of 66 years; 5 siblings – Henry ( Eliza), Eddy ( Graham), Rendell (Gladys), Verdon (Mary), Cavell (Robert); 5 children – Trudy (Wayne) Pauline, Roger (Dallas), Bronson (Crystal) and Tony (Tina); 9 grandchildren – Micheal, Suzanne, Christopher, Alison, Dillon, Katrina, Sasha, Emily and Richard; 4 great-grandchildren – Leah, William, Cameron and Grayson.
Elizabeth’s presence for 86 years was a true gift to those who respected and loved her. Her life, often riddled with challenges is one that we should celebrate on this day and be honored that we were a part of her journey.
